Bridges managed by Network Rail

The request was partially successful.

Dear Network Rail Limited,

Please could you supply me with an up to date list of bridges (including footbridges) on the Network Rail infrastructure, including their geographic coordinates.

I am aware that you have previously supplied this list in response to FOI requests, including one from myself just under three years ago. However, that list is probably out of date by now, and the lists supplied more recently do not include the specific data I require.

For each bridge, I would like the following minimum data:

Bridge ID
ELR
Geographic coordinates (either latitude/longitude, OS eastings/northings or OS grid)
Type of bridge (underline, overline, etc)
Category of bridge (footbridge, river bridge, traffic bridge, etc)
Bridge description or name
Owner/maintainer of the bridge, where not Network Rail

However, any other available data would be useful. If the request can be met simply by extracting a list of all bridges from the CARRS database, that would probably be sufficient.

As a guideline, what I would expect would be something which is essentially a combination of the data provided in these two FOI requests:

https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/l...
https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/b...

Finally, given that this appears to be a recurring request, may I suggest that in order to save you time and effort in the future, it would probably be simpler to publish the CARRS database itself as a spreadsheet on your website periodically.

Yours faithfully,

Mark Goodge

Dear FOI,

Thank you for your response. However, the spreadsheet attached to your reply was, for some reason, unreadable - Excel reports it as being corrupt, and is unable to effectively repair it. Please could you send another copy.

Yours sincerely,

Dear FOI,

Yes, that one's fine.

I do have a related query, though. The previous time when I made this request, you were able to supply me with the geographic coordinates for the bridges. Why have you not been able to do so this time?

Good Morning Mr Goodge,

Thank you for confirming that the file could be opened.

In regards to your question, we do not hold geographical coordinates within the CARRS database. In order to add this dataset to the output we would have had to undertake additional analysis to identify geographical coordinates and match to the requested information.

I hope that this helps explain.

Dear FOI,

In that case, please could you do the additional analysis to identify geographical coordinates and match them to the data. Since you have already done this once, I would not expect it to exceed the cost limits to do it again.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Goodge

FOI, Network Rail Limited

Good Morning Mr Goodge,

As you had requested the geographical coordinates in your original request and as advised we were unable to provide this information, I will pass your request over to the Internal Review Team to process
