Bridge repairs and maintenance - Sky News FOI request

We're waiting for Ashna Hurynag to read recent responses and update the status.

Dear all,

I hope you're well. It's Ashna here from Sky News.

I'm getting in touch with an FOI request to be used as part of a Sky News piece.

We'd appreciate a response as soon as possible.

Questions requiring response:

1) How many bridges on motorways or A-roads have sections which are in a "poor" or "very poor condition"?

2) How many pedestrian and highway bridges have reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete present within them and their fixtures?

3) In the past three years, how much has been spent on repairing and upgrading bridge structures to remove reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete from them?

4) In the past three years, how much has been spent on repairing and upgrading bridge structures?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Ashna

Good Afternoon

We are in receipt of you FOI but require further clarification on one of
the questions.

 1. How many bridges on motorways or A-roads have sections which are in a
"poor" or "very poor condition"?

Can you please define what you mean when you refer to a “section”.  All
elements of a structure are assessed for each Bridge Condition Index
inspection (General Inspection). All items are scored individually, so
this includes elements like painting finishes, vegetation etc. We would
need to understand exactly what you are referring to by “section.” This
may be an intensive search depending on what exactly you are after.

The BCI scores are used to calculate if a bridge is in a “State of Good
Repair.” A structure is considered to be in a 'State of Good Repair' if
the weighted BCI Score (0.6 x BCI Average + 0.4 x BCI Critical) is greater
than 65. Of the 309 bridges on A roads or motorways in North Yorkshire
that are maintained by NYC, only 3 score below 65.
