Brexit Impact Assessment

Sarah Richens made this Freedom of Information request to Daventry District Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

Daventry District Council did not have the information requested.

Dear Daventry District Council,

I am writing to make a freedom of information request. Please can you supply me with any Brexit impact assessments the council has done for the effects of different Brexit outcomes on the economy and public services in Daventry district. Firstly, have you done any? If not, why not? Surely since our MP Mr. Chris Heaton Harris is the undersecretary for DExEU and long term advocate for leaving the EU, Daventry should be the first council to actually identify the economic benefits of Brexit and that illusive Brexit Dividend for the NHS that we will actually see locally? If not I should think that would be quite embarrassing for Mr. Heaton Harris...I have made the same request from Northampton Country Council as well to be thorough.
I am particularly interested in impact/risk assessments of a No Deal Scenario but also would be really interested to see assessment on a Chequers Deal that Mr. Heaton Harris advocates for the government but also for a Canada Style FTA that Mr. Heaton Harris’s longlost friends in the ERG advocate (Mr. Heaton Harris is an ex-ERG chairman).
Please can you let me know of any fee attached to this request because I am a Moulton resident on a zero hour contract, on just above minimum wage - definately not part of the liberal metropolitan Elite - so I would need to assess whether or not I can afford the fee. I may have to crowd fund it if it is beyond my finances.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah Richens

Dear Freedom of Information,

Thankyou for taking the time to respond to my request however I am quite simply shocked and appalled that neither Daventry or Northamptonshire county council has done ANY impact assessments on how Brexit is going to effect locally economy or public services. Especially as Chris Heaton harris our MP is the undersecretary for DExEU! Shocking and quite embarrassing really. Surely here we should be able to find that elusive Brexit dividend to the local economy? No?
Simple questions should have been asked by now like : how will Brexit effect our public services? How will Brexit new customs arrangements effect local SME’s exporting into the EU? Are there any Customs agents they can use? What about the high percentage of EU nationals working in the local economy, will we still be able to attract enough trained staff to fill vacancies in manufacturing and public services ? If not will that have an effect Northants productivity and therefore have a knock on effect on the local economy? That doesn’t even begin to look at how procurement for the council will be effected and the knock on effects on it’s budgets. Will you have the funds to keep public services running in the event of no deal? Why has no one sought to answer these questions? That is a dereliction of duty by the council in my opinion.
I shall make sure everyone is aware there has been no local planning or impact assessments done for Daventry and therefore the council is totally unprepared for Brexit when I go out and campaign for a Peoples Vote locally. I also feel very uneasy that Daventry or Northampton councils will not be able to fulfill their duty of care to the most vulnerable local residents whether in a no deal scenario or a properly planned exit.
I urge the council in the strongest terms possible to commision some sort of contingency planning and that should start with impact assessments of different Brexit scenarios, especially no deal, on our public services.

Yours sincerely,

Sarah Richens
