Keith McDermott

Dear Scottish Water,
Since June 2016, a number of stories/revelations have appeared in both the mainstream media and online sites regarding the grave implications and severe consequences of Britain leaving the European Union without ''a deal'', most notably in November 2018 it was feared that the UK water supply was in jeopardy given that the chemicals needed for the purification process wouldn't be available post 29th March 2019 (please read as 31st October 2019), can any assurances be given that citizens/residents of Scotland will have an uninterrupted supply of clean and fresh drinking water beyond 1st November 2019 or is it too early to ascertain what will happen?
Thank you.

Yours faithfully,

Keith McDermott

Dear McDermott,

Freedom of Information request - BrExit And Scottish Water Supply

Thank you for your request for information which we processed under the
Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002.

Your request for information was for the following:

“Can any assurances be given that citizens/residents of Scotland will have
an uninterrupted supply of clean and fresh drinking water beyond 1st
November 2019 or is it too early to ascertain what will happen?”

In response to the above request I can advise Scottish Water operates a
number of Business Continuity Plans which take account of scenarios that
may arise, and seeks to mitigate risks to key business operations.  These
plans have been reviewed and refreshed to ensure appropriate cognisance of
the UK exit from the EU (Brexit).  This has been carried out alongside
discussions with our supply chain, including chemical suppliers, to
understand both internal and external exposures and assign appropriate
ownership and action.

We are actively engaging with other water and sewerage companies through
industry forums such as WaterUK to further test chemical supply scenarios
and mitigations, as well as understand and support knowledge and
capabilities across the industry.  Similarly we are involved in
discussions with the Scottish and UK Governments, and regulators to
understand and communicate risks, impacts and expectations.

We are doing everything reasonable to ensure the service we provide to our
customers is maintained.  At this stage we do not anticipate any service
issues resulting from a ‘No-Deal’ Brexit.

If you have any queries regarding your FOI request please feel free to
contact me and I will be happy to assist. You can do this by contacting
the following email address [email address]

You can seek a review of this response within forty working days and
thereafter appeal to the Scottish Information Commissioner.

Further information on the appeals procedure can be obtained from the
attached document and the Commissioner's website at
[1]www.itspublicknowledge.info/Appeal.

Yours sincerely

Margaret Hopkins
