Greg Auger made this Freedom of Information request to University of Cambridge

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear the University of Cambridge,

Under the Freedom of Information Act, please can you provide me with the following information regarding undergraduate admissions:

For each of the last four undergraduate application cycles (for typical entry in 2008 through to 2011), seperately for Home (UK) students, 'other' EU students and for International students:
1. The number of applications revieved through UCAS by the standard deadline for equal consideration (15th January for most courses, but 15th October, 24th March, etc where applicable).
2. The number of offers made to applicants (of those in #1).
3. The number of students (of those in #2) who made the university their "firm".
4. The number of students (of those in #2) who made the university their "insurance".
5. The number of those in #3 who enrolled at the university in the Autumn.
6. The number of those in #4 who enrolled at the university in the Autumn.
7. The number of students who enrolled at the university in the Autumn, but are not included in #1. This should include students accepted through "clearing" and "adjustment" and anyone else who did not submit an application by the standard deadline referred to in #1.

Please include deferred applications in the application cycle they were submitted in, rather than in the following cycle.

For the 2011 cycle, I appreciate definitive numbers for #5, #6 and #7 may not be known, but please can you provide the latest estimates based on available data.

I believe this should be 84 pieces of data. I look forward to your response, which I would ask you to provide in either plain text or an ISO standard spreadsheet document (either OpenDocument Spreadsheet ISO/IEC 26300:2006 or Office Open XML Workbook ECMA-376 ISO/IEC 29500) as I am entitled to ask under Section 11 of the Freedom of Information Act.

Yours faithfully,
G. Auger.

Dear James Knapton,

In your statistics, you state (in cell E15) that in 2008 there were 12 unknown applicants who "firmed" their offer. You later state (in cell E27) that 16 unknown applicants were admitted to the university. There is a similar discrepancy for 2010. Please can you explain this? May I encourage you to review your statistics and ensure they are accurate.

In your letter to me you stated that "Data for application and entry to the University in autumn 2011 has not been supplied because it is not yet held in a final state." In my original request I stated my appreciation that final enrolment data may not yet be available, but I do not understand why information about past events (the number of applicants, offers, firms and insurances) should still be estimates. Please could you explain this?

Yours sincerely,
G. Auger

FOI, University of Cambridge

Dear Mr Auger,

Thank you for your email of today's date.

The University apologises for the incorrect figures that you were supplied with originally. The 'Firm Admits: Unknown' figures should read as follows:
2008: 12.
2009: 11.
2010: 7.
Concomitant adjustments should be made to the relevant totals lines.

Regarding your request for data relating to the most recent admissions cycle (October 2011 entry), the University repeats its assertion that the relevant UCAS cycle will not formally close until the end of this month. However, the University should have made clear that it would not have been possible to locate, retrieve and extract this data within 18 hours along with all of the other data you requested. This part of your request should therefore have been refused formally under section 12(1) of the Act because the supply of the information, while held in part, would have taken your request significantly in excess of the appropriate limit of £450 as stipulated in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.

Because my letter dated 18 October 2011 did not adequately explain this fact, you of course still have the right to raise a complaint about or request a review of the University's handling of your request dated 20 September 2011 by following the procedures set out at the end of my letter.

Yours sincerely,

James Knapton.
