Branding

Steve Elibank made this Freedom of Information request to Open University

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear Open University,

These questions pertain to your logo and branding.

— When was your current logo, corporate style, graphics and
branding implemented?
— Who designed it?
— How much were the designers paid for their services?
— Were other designers consulted? Was there competition? If so, who
was involved, and was any payment made to unsuccessful firms?
— Are there any "alternate" versions of the branding (as in, any
which were designed but not taken up), and if so, please supply an
electronic copy.
— Please provide me with a copy of your logo guidelines, branding
manual or equivalent document.

Yours faithfully,
Steve Elibank

Freedom-of-Information, Open University

Dear Mr Elibank

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request. Please see below for a
response provided by our Communications Department

When was your current logo, corporate style, graphics and branding
implemented?

Our logo was designed in 1969 by our head of design. It has been refreshed
and lightly revamped at various points in our history. Most recently, the
shield of our logo has been re-drawn to work better on i-phone apps as
there were technical issues with the way it presented on a small screen.
The design work was carried out by a specialist in e-0media artwork
creation and was not competitively tendered

Who designed it?

The Open University head of design at the time.

How much were the designers paid for their services?

A principal lecturer equivalent salary for the number of days taken

Were other designers consulted? Was there competition? If so, who was
involved, and was any payment made to unsuccessful firms?

No, the in-house job worked and was accepted

Are there any "alternate" versions of the branding (as in, any which were
designed but not taken up), and if so, please supply an electronic copy.

No

Please provide me with a copy of your logo guidelines, branding manual or
equivalent document.

I'm sorry these are currently unavailable. Please let us know if you
would like a copy sending when they do become available.

Yours sincerely

Dear Open University,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Open University's handling of my FOI request 'Branding'.

My first issue: I asked the question, "How much were the designers paid for their services?" The answer I received was, "A principal lecturer equivalent salary for the number of days taken." This is no answer: I clearly wanted (and want) to know the precise amount of money which was given to the designer of the branding.

My second issue: I asked for "a copy of your logo guidelines, branding manual or equivalent document," but was met with the response that this is "currently unavailable." How can this be possible? If it exists at all, then you should send it.

This is how I wish to proceed on the latter point of this complaint: Section 11 of the Freedom of Information Act entitles me to specify a format, and I nominate an electronic format. Therefore, please email me a copy of your logo guidelines, branding manual or
equivalent document. If it only exists on paper, then scan it in, as required by the Act.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address:
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/br...

Please reply to acknowledge receipt.

Yours faithfully,
Steve Elibank

Dear Mr Elibank,

We have reviewed your Freedom of Information request and I can provide further information in response to your request.

In your request for a review you asked to know the precise amount of money which was given to the designer of the branding.

This information is not held by the University. The Open University logo was designed by our Head of Design who was a salaried employee. This was part of his duties and we have no records of how much time he spent on this or of his annual salary at that time. If you require an estimated cost, in bands of £10,000 it would be 'less than £10,000'.

The second part of your request for a review involved the unavailability of our brand guidelines. The guidelines are currently being updated and the electronic version has been deleted. However, we have located a paper copy of the guidelines issued to staff at the time of the last update and a scan of this leaflet is attached.

I apologise that your request was not answered fully before. If you feel that the University has not complied with the Freedom of Information Act you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office. Please see their website at http://www.ico.gov.uk/complaints/freedom...
for details of how to do this.
