Borderline Personality Disorder
Dear Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust,
Please provide the following information in full for the years 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023.
(Please note that I use the term 'borderline personality disorder' but would also like stats for 'emotionally unstable personality disorder' if that is the diagnostic term that your trust uses.)
1. Please provide your trust policy for borderline personality disorder diagnosis and treatment.
2. How much funding is received for the care of borderline personality disorder and how is this money spent?
3. How many adult patients are there within the trust with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder?
4. What specialist treatments or therapeutic interventions do the trust facilitate for all patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder?
5. How much does it cost the trust per year to provide medication to adults diagnosed with borderline personality disorder?
6. How many patients/service users with borderline personality disorder require in-patient care?
7. How much does it cost the trust to facilitate this in-patient care?
8. Does the trust provide dialectical behaviour therapy? If so, please provide the numbers of patients/service users who have used this service. If not, is there a plan to implement this treatment?
9. How many suicides of patients with borderline personality disorder have there been each year?
10. How many complaints have been lodged in relation to borderline personality disorder treatment?
Yours faithfully,
Tess Linton

Dear Tess,
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 - SECTION 8 REQUEST
I am writing regarding your request for information dated 03/01/2024. In
order to identify if we hold the information you have requested, we will
need to seek some further clarification from you.
I would be grateful if you could please clarify:
3. How many adult patients are there within the trust with a diagnosis of
borderline personality disorder?
Please can you confirm what you mean by “adults” – does this include
working age adults (aged 18-65) and older adults (aged 65+)?
Moreover, please can you confirm if this includes patients with a recorded
diagnosis of BPD referred/admitted to community mental health / Forensic
mental health / physical health / adult learning disabilities (ALD)
services? (Please note that not all patients with a recorded diagnosis of
BPD would have been referred / receiving treatment for BPD)
6. How many patients/service users with borderline personality disorder
require in-patient care?
Please note that we do not hold this information in a reportable format
and would not be able to extract data regarding reason for admission to MH
inpatient services without manually reviewing patient records.
However, we could potentially provide the number of inpatients admitted to
mental health services each year with a diagnosis of BPD (they would not
necessarily have been admitted / receiving treatment for BPD). Please can
you confirm if you would like to proceed with this alternative?
Moreover, please can you confirm if this includes patients with a recorded
diagnosis of BPD admitted to Forensic mental health / ALD inpatient
services?
8. Does the trust provide dialectical behaviour therapy? If so, please
provide the numbers of patients/service users who have used this service.
If not, is there a plan to implement this treatment?
Is this still specifically referring to patients/service users with a
diagnosis of BPD?
Please note that we are unable to confirm at this time whether we hold or
will be able to provide the requested information under the terms of the
Freedom of Information Act. Due to the nature of the information you are
requesting, please be aware that your request may still exceed the
appropriate cost/time limit as per Section 12 of the FOI Act (subsequent
to clarification).
Please provide me with a response by 07/02/2024. Once we have received the
further clarification needed, we will be able to process your request
further. However, please note that in the meantime your request will be
placed on hold.
Kind regards,
Information Governance Office
