Boat License Evasion By Type

Alan Baxter made this Freedom of Information request to Canal & River Trust

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

We're waiting for Alan Baxter to read a recent response and update the status.

Dear Canal & River Trust,

I understand License Evasion by boat owners is below 4%.

If there are 36,000 boats then this equates to something like 1, 400 unlicensed boats.

Could you break this figure down further and tell me how many of these boats were previously licensed as Leisure Boats having "Home Moorings" and how many were licensed as Leisure Boats "Boat Without A Home Mooring".

Could you similarly highlight the numbers that were previously Licensed as "historic" or "trade" that are now unlicensed. And so-on for all license categories.

Can you confirm whether you are counting boats as unlicensed where they have been removed from Canal & River Trust Waters where they have previously held a licence.?

The data on the last license held should be on the system; otherwise how would you know a boat even existed.

Yours faithfully,

Alan Baxter

Dear Mr Baxter,

Further to your request of 26^th October and our acknowledgement of the
same date, please see attached the information you have requested. These
figures were for unlicensed boats from our National Boat Count in March
2017 and the attachment does not include boats where they have been
removed from the Trust waterways. In terms of the historic status, where
this has been left blank in the attached it is because we do not hold any
records of the historic status for the boat concerned.

If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you have the
right to ask for an internal review. Internal review requests should be
submitted within two months of the date of this email and should be sent
