Blue plaques erected by the council

Frankie Roberto made this Freedom of Information request to Portsmouth City Council

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am researching the locations of blue plaques erected on historic buildings by local authorities across the UK.

Your website mentions at http://www.portsmouthcc.gov.uk/living/14... that the council have erected some blue plaques, in addition to those erected by English Heritage.

Do you have a list of these plaques?

Could you also tell me whether the council still considers new blue plaques for erection?

Yours faithfully,

Frankie Roberto

Dear Frankie Roberto,

FOI INFORMATION REQUEST - INFO PROVIDED

Thank you for your request for information received on 27/02/2009 which
was considered under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

In accordance with FOIA Portsmouth City Council confirms the following
Information regarding Blue Plaques.

Portsmouth Record Office hold copies of minutes of the 4th National Panel
Meeting (dated 1/12/200) between English Heritage and the representatives
of Portsmouth, Southampton and Birmingham city councils concerning the
placing of Blue Plaques. This reiterates the criteria, i.e. the building
must still be standing and I believe the current owner of the building
must give permission. These minutes give details of the final shortlist
for plaques in the 3 cities. The minutes make clear that English Heritage
initially intended to carry on with the Blue Plaque scheme and indeed
extend it to other cities although I understand that this decision has now
been reversed. I do not hold any additional information as to why the
particular individuals were chosen to be commemorated by a Blue Plaque; I
imagine these records will be held by English Heritage. The City Museum
and Record Office does not hold details of blue plaques provided by the
City council.

The Freedom of Information team has also spoken with a Conservation
officer who has confirmed the same; Portsmouth City Council does not hold
an additional list for blue plaques. Thank you.

Under the Re- Use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005 (SI
2005/1515) the supplied information may not be re-used without obtaining
the permission of Portsmouth City Council.

Frankie Roberto

Dear Peter,

Further to my e-mail, I have discovered this photos of a plaque erected in the past by Portsmouth City Council: http://www.flickr.com/photos/atrebatus/3...

This does not appear to be one of those erected under English Heritage's pilot scheme.

Can you confirm that the Council has no records of these plaques (I appreciate that they were probably erected some time ago!)

Yours sincerely,

Frankie Roberto

Dear Mr Frankie Roberto,

Regarding your additional questions for the Blue Plaque Schemes in
Portsmouth :

Further to my e-mail, I have discovered this photos of a plaque

erected in the past by Portsmouth City Council:

This does not appear to be one of those erected under English

Heritage's pilot scheme.

Can you confirm that the Council has no records of these plaques (I

appreciate that they were probably erected some time ago!)

I have made enquires to our Museum Service with the following response:

Local History Officers for PCC: We are both in agreement that there
are no lists of plaques installed by the council anywhere in our
paperwork. I think any plaques that have been put up by the
council, outside the English Heritage scheme, have been done on an ad
hoc basis, for example the Doyle plaque went up in 2007 as part of
the activities to mark the formal opening of the new gallery and the
arrival of the collection. The Wyllie plaque and Peter Sellars
plaques certainly pre-date our time at the council, and hold no other
Information.

Planning/Conservation have responded with :

"Plaques have been put up by Portsmouth City Council over many years
probably dating back to the early 1900's. Because of this there is no
definitive list however, we are aware of most of them and we are
intending to gradually add them onto our website".

The Conservation Team have agreed to draw up a list of all the plaques
they are aware of and try to add these to the website over the next
couple of weeks. This list will be updated as and when other plaques, that
they are not currently aware of, are brought to their attention.

Under the Re- Use of Public Sector Information Regulations 2005 (SI
2005/1515) the supplied information may not be re-used without obtaining
the permission of Portsmouth City Council.
