Dear United Utilities Water PLC,

Can you provide a list of chemicals, regularly and recently added to tap water in the Knowsley Area.

Recently, you wrote to some residents to inform them:

"We're carrying out some night time work on the water pipes in your area, between 24th October - 1 4th November 2021, from 1 1 pm until 5.30am

We wanted to let you know about work
we're carrying out to clean the water
pipes in your area - so we can continue
to provide high quality water to your home or business. It's part of a programme taking place across the North West region to help remove natural mineral deposits
and keep the pipes in tip-top condition.
You can find further information
at unitedutilities.com/doe-cleaning

What does the work involve?

We'll be using the water in the pipes to
flush out and remove any natural mineral deposits that may have settled at the bottom."

Can you explain what natural deposits form?

Provide a timetable of previous such works, for the past 10yrs including chemicals etc used.

Many thanks.

Yours faithfully,

Tatt J

A response to your queries is set out below:

1)   Can you provide a list of chemicals, regularly and recently added to
tap water in the Knowsley Area.

Almost all drinking water treatment involves the use of chemicals to make
the water safe to drink. This is done via carefully controlled and
automated processes that adjust the dose to ensure the water treatment is
optimal.

This occurs at one of our water treatment works.  Only chemicals which
have been approved for use in drinking water supplies are used.

You can find information about the water supply to Knowsley by entering
your postcode on our website. on our website at
[1]www.unitedutilities.com/help-and-support/your-water-supply/your-water/water-quality
.  You will also find a summary of our water quality analysis in your area
which includes naturally occurring and residual chemical content of
treated water

2)    What does the work involve?

We'll be using the water in the pipes to flush out and remove any natural
mineral deposits that may have settled at the bottom. These deposits
typically consist of iron and manages, along with other metals and
minerals that occur naturally in water supplies. We treat water to ensure
most of the iron and manganese is removed, to ensure the water we supply
meets the standards required by our regulators and is clean and safe to
drink.  However small amounts of iron and manganese remain, and can form
deposits in water pipes over long periods of time.

3) Provide a timetable of previous such works, for the past 10yrs
including chemicals etc used.

UUW is carrying out a new series of work consisting of “night maintenance
flushing activity” which is to minimise discolouration of mains water.
This is a new activity not previously carried out and involves using water
only.  This is being carried out across the region.  This commenced in
approximately June 2021 and it is estimated that approximately 1000
district meter areas will be completed by the end of December 2021.  We
are notifying customers prior to undertaking these works.

We hope the information is useful.

Regards

EIR Team

Dear EIRRequests,

We are seeking the information on the list of chemicals:
Can you provide a list of chemicals, regularly and recently added to tap water in the Knowsley Area.

Additionally, there has been further works in the Huyton area of Knowsley and the gunk coming out of the distiller is like something never seen before.

What is this, specificially and how harmful to tap drinking residents wil it be?

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

J Tatt
