Birth Certificate Photocopy law.

Plymouth City Council did not have the information requested.

Dear Plymouth City Council,

I have a few questions about the act of photocopying a birth certificate based on my young sons own certificate.

When we registered our son at the local plymouth registry office we were told that WE were not allowed to make copies of any kind and that only the "original" is the legal document.
I assume then that any photocopied certificate would clasify as being "illegal"

My son has just reciently started at a nursery and all is well but i have a question about
WHY the school has asked me for a "photocopy" of my sons birth certificate, in my eyes they do not need this, all they need is to have him registered at the school with his current address. If the school insists on having this photocopy of the birth certificate and a "photocopy" has been deemed to be an illegal then surely the school is "breaking the law"

We were told that the reason for no photocopies was a matter of identity theft which I can understand, but all I can see at the moment is double standards and a rule for one and a different rule others, a law is a law.
I am expected to uphold the laws passed so why can a school compleatly bypass this rule?

We are the parents and we are told NO but a school can hold this birth certificate information for all to see, there is something wrong here and I am annoyed with all of the hypocritical rules that are all arround us.

Thankyou for reading
I await your response.

Yours faithfully,
a nony-mouse

Chapman, Kirk, Plymouth City Council

Dear Sir / Madam,

Thank you for your email regarding the photocopying of your son’s birth
certificate by his school.

Unfortunately your email is not a request for information that is held by
Plymouth City Council and is instead about a school’s internal processes.
Therefore your request cannot be responded to under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000.

I would recommend that the best course of action would be to raise this
issue direct with your son’s school in the first instance, and ask that
they provide a response to your queries.

Yours sincerely,
