GRO First Point of Contact,

Dear Rosemary

Thank you for your enquiry.

The General Register Office (GRO) holds a central copy of all birth, death
and marriage registrations for England and Wales, from 1 July 1837 and
civil partnerships records since December 2005. GRO can also supply
certificates for some births, deaths and marriages registered overseas.

Current legislation only allows us to release this information by means of
the issue of a paper certified copy ("certificate") of the relevant entry,
and payment of the relevant statutory fee for a certified copy. We are
unable to confirm whether an entry is the actual record you require prior
to ordering.

The records are not linked, and therefore, we are unable to compile family
trees or trace people.

Please note, for recent events registered within the last 6 months (for
marriages this period is extended to 18 months), applications for
certificates should be made to the Register Office in the district where
the event took place.

For information on how to order a certificate on our website on

We look forward to receiving your order.

Regards
