Biological Sciences Acceptance Rate
Dear University College London,
I would like to know the average grades (particularly a levels) of people that joined the course. In other words what did the 2013/14/15/16/17/18 get in average for Biological Sciences when they joined UCL
Yours faithfully,
Perry Maison

Dear Ms Maison,
Thank you for your below request for information.
We have been looking into how to respond to your FOI request and have found that calculating an ‘average’ is particularly problematic when discussing non-numeric values, such as ‘A’ level grades.
Would the following alternative be acceptable?
Providing you with the modal average of the best three ‘A’ level results. For example, if there were 7 students who had got:
• A*AA
• A*AA
• A*AA
• AAA
• AAB
• ABB
• BBB
The modal value would be A*AA, as that is the one that comes up most often.
An alternative would be to provide you with the median which in the above example would be AAA, as that’s the one that comes in the middle (please let us know if this is preferable).
I look forward to hearing from you.
Kind regards,
Mehwish Sultan

Dear Finance.FOI Requests,
I would like to have both the median and the modal.
If it is not possible to have both please provide the median.
Yours sincerely,
Perry Maison
