Bin surveys - Wales

The request was successful.

Dear Caerphilly County Borough Council,

I would like to know whether the Authority has carried out any form of bin survey over the past five years.

Can the Authority provide the number of bin surveys it has conducted in each calendar year since 2014?
If applicable, can the Authority also provide the number of households subject to bin surveys in the same period?

For clarity, a bin survey is used to identify the types of rubbish being thrown away by households or which bins are being used, or both.

:: I would like to receive data in an Excel file format.
:: I would appreciate the Authority providing any assistance to me regarding my request, if appropriate and as per relevant legislation.

Yours faithfully,

Basia Cummings

Dear Basia Cummings

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 - INFORMATION REQUEST

Thank you for your request for information received on 26^th March 2019.
We have considered your request and enclose the following information:

(1) I would like to know whether the Authority has carried out any form of
bin survey over the past five years.

Yes

(2) Can the Authority provide the number of bin surveys it has conducted
in each calendar year since 2014?

Not applicable.

However, in 2014 WRAP Cymru â Wales commissioned a company to undertake
a compositional analysis of the following bin services: Food waste
recycling caddy collection, Refuse wheeled bin collection, Dry recycling
wheeled bin collection. The sample was designed to be representative of
the various demographic profiles across the County Borough.  240
properties were targeted. We do not hold the results of the compositional
analysis

Additionally, in March 2019 a regional exercise â Everyone is doing itâ
co-ordinated by Cardiff City Council and Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough
Council involved a sample of properties within our area to ascertain
participation in the respective suite of waste and recycling services.
This was a visual inspection of the refuse, recycling and food waste
containers, checking if the correct materials were being placed in the
correct receptacles.

The exercise was a snapshot inspection of a sample of 900 properties and
results are attached in the spreadsheet. In line with other local
authorities taking part in this initiative, the categories in the attached
are as follows -

Green - Suggesting the household recycles and uses the food waste service
at every opportunity.

Amber - Suggesting the household could recycle more, or may be missing a
few things.

Red - Suggesting the household needs to start recycling and getting the
basics right.
