Subject: Bicycle awareness of Edinburgh tram drivers
Thank you for your request for information of 23 October 2018.
Your request has been processed and considered under the terms of the Freedom of Information
(Scotland) Act 2002. Your request for information has been considered and the information is
provided below.
1.
How many hours of training does a trainee tram driver go through prior to becoming a
fully qualified tram driver in Edinburgh?
Our Trainee Tram Drivers have to undertake a minimum of 85 driving hours over an 8-
12 week Training Period.
2.
Of this training, how much is specifical y dedicated towards awareness of and how to
safely interact with people on bicycles?
6-8 weeks of Training covers Professional Driving (this includes hazard perception, route
knowledge and road markers) thus raising awareness of pedestrians, cyclists and other
road users.
3.
Are tram drivers in Edinburgh required to hold a current, valid UK driving licence?
To be eligible for a Tram Driver role an applicant must be over 18 years old, have a full
UK driver’s licence held for a minimum of one year with two years driving experience
and no more than 3 penalty points.
4.
Do Edinburgh trams have forward facing cameras that record continuously?
The trams do have cameras which record continuously but they are designed as
rearward facing cameras i.e. rear-view mirrors and not for forward vision.
5.
Are members of the public able to request footage that has been recorded from an
Edinburgh tram?
Requests for CCTV footage would be considered under our GDPR rules subject to
meeting certain criteria as noted within our GDPR request form which can be found on
our website www.edinburghtrams.com.
