Please can you produce the original plans for the bentonite wall installed in the 1990s by British Gas at Bell Green, Lower Sydenham?
Please can you clarify which company is currently responsible for overseeing the bentonite wall's maintenance and integrity across different landholdings?
Please clarify which company has inherited other rights and responsibilities for the Bell Green site, post privatisation of British Gas?

Dear SGN,
Thank you for your prompt response. The bentonite wall surrounds the entire area of the old gasworks at Bell Green, SE26. As an underground structure, it runs under land which has been sold off to different parties, and ownership is obscure. The vast majority of the gasworks site is postcode SE26 4PU.
SGN certainly still owns land - its pressure regulation station is at 51.43093055913113, -0.03572035284551657, and I believe it still owns the British Gas Buffer Zone at 51.43253588480319, -0.03435779066649811 The Buffer Zone is the northernmost section of the bentonite wall.
The area of the Bentonite wall damaged by leylandii tree roots is at 51.431160, -0.037120
The area of the Bentonite wall damaged by heavy plant traffic is at 51.431844, -0.036352. This was in course of SGN's demolition of the gasholders.

Hi Julia,
SGN undertook gasholder dismantling and infilling works under planning
consent from Lewisham Council. The bentonite wall was known about and
recorded on plans. At the time of the works the section of wall adjacent
to our site and works was owned by Kier Properties.
As part of the agreement with Kier Properties, SGN and their contractor
(Keltbray) agreed to monitor the bentonite wall and an appropriate
standoff from the wall was agreed during the works.
There was no damage sustained to the bentonite wall during our works. The
SGN works were contained within the two gasholder structures.
The site has subsequently been sold to Barratt London.
SGN only retain land within the SE corner of the former gasholder site.

Dear Scott,
Thanks to hear from you again. You are responding specifically about SGN's recent ownership of the Bell Green gasholders site, while I am actually trying to identify the party with overall oversight of the integrity of the entire circumference of the bentonite wall. This encircles the whole ex-gasworks site at Bell Green, which began to be split up immediately after the privatisation of British Gas. Landownership is now split between parties including SGN, Kier, Sainsburys, the John Lyon Charity, Apex Capital Partners, and the West Midlands Pension Fund, amongst others.
Please can you name the body that has the oversight of the maintenance of this vital piece of environmental protection, which prevents heavy metal poisoning from spreading in the groundwater between sites?

Hi Julia,
We do not know, but the Environment Agency are the key regulator for the bentonite wall, so I would suggest you might be better contacting them for help.
SGN current landholding is contained within the bentonite wall, but we do not have any responsibility for maintaining or monitoring the wall.
Kier Properties and their subsequent buyers would have those obligations along with the other landowners.
