BEIS Comfort Letter To Post Office Limited Regarding Critical Intervention To Fund Its Historical Shortfall Scheme

Response to this request is long overdue. By law, under all circumstances, Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy should have responded by now (details). You can complain by requesting an internal review.

Dear Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy,

Your recent response to my FOI request 2021/19605 regarding BEIS’s monitoring of Post Office Limited (Annex C; BEIS Performance and Risk Committee Reports) states:

‘...the Historical Shortfall Scheme was oversubscribed (2,200 vs 500 anticipated) and the claims could cost up to £311m, materially above POL’s budget of £35m, and there is a risk that this would impact POL’s ability to operate as a going concern. Officials are preparing a comfort letter regarding financial support, ahead of a funding request by POL’.

Please can you disclose the comfort letter which was sent to POL regarding BEIS’s assurance of financial support, as well as the funding request which POL submitted to the department.

Many thanks,

Yours sincerely
Eleanor Shaikh
