BDS Dentistry Admission Statistics

The request was refused by University of Manchester.

Dear University of Manchester,

I am writing to you regarding your BDS Dentistry (A206) course.
Could you please provide myself with an Excel spreadsheet with the following data/information from the last 2 admission cycles:
1) A Level grades (predicted)
2) A Level grades (achieved)
3) UCAT score
4) Whether an offer was made
5) Whether they were interviewed

Could you also provide me with the average GCSE grade for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics for those who were given an offer?
Also, what was the lowest GCSE grade combination for those who were given an interview and given an offer?

Yours faithfully,

J Singh

Dear J Singh,

Thank you for your request for information received by The University of
Manchester on 18 May 2020 which was as follows:

I am writing to you regarding your BDS Dentistry (A206) course.

Could you please provide myself with an Excel spreadsheet with the
following data/information from the last 2 admission cycles:

1) A Level grades (predicted)

2) A Level grades (achieved)

3) UCAT score

4) Whether an offer was made

5) Whether they were interviewed

Could you also provide me with the average GCSE grade for Biology,
Chemistry and Mathematics for those who were given an offer?

Also, what was the lowest GCSE grade combination for those who were given
an interview and given an offer?

The University has now considered your request and unfortunately the
information you are seeking cannot be provided at this time. We have been
advised by admissions staff within the School of Medical Sciences that
they would need to go into each application to transcribe the details for
your request. Last year, we received 876 applications for the 5 year
programme and this year we received over 1000. Therefore they would need
to manually assess over 1876 applications to be able to provide a
response. Even at a conservative estimate of 5 minutes per record, this
process would take in excess of 150 hours to complete. This task would
therefore clearly take in excess of the 18 hour ‘Appropriate Limit’ (as
defined in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate
Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004). As a result, Section 12 of the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 applies and regrettably this task cannot be
undertaken at this stage. This email serves to act as a refusal notice for
this request, as per Section 17 (5) of the Act.

I can provide you with the following advice which I hope is of assistance
to you.

All of the applicants interviewed and subsequently made an offer would
have met the published academic entry criteria here:
[1]https://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/under....
We don’t work on average grades – applicants have to meet the published
academic entry criteria based on their application or their application
will be rejected straight away.

In terms of UCAT scores, there’s no minimum cut off for Dentistry as it’s
not the only thing we look at on the application. Applicants wouldn’t be
considered with a band 4 in the SJT, as published on the website. The
application process on our website should explain everything that you need
to know: [2]https://www.bmh.manchester.ac.uk/study/d....

I trust this is of use to you however if you feel that The University of
Manchester has refused access to information to which you are entitled, or
has not dealt with your request appropriately under the FOIA, you have a
right of appeal.

An appeal in the first instance should be directed to the Information
Governance Office at [3][email address]. You should include:

·         details of your initial request

·         any other relevant information

You must make this appeal within 40 working days from receipt of your
response. We will not accept appeals received after this date, as per the
Freedom of Information Code of Practice, Section 5.3.

The University will deal with your appeal within a reasonable time, and
will inform you of the projected time scale on receipt of your complaint.
You are also welcome to contact the Information Governance Office with
informal questions about the handling of your request.

After The University’s internal appeals procedure has been exhausted, you
have a further right of appeal to the Information Commissioner’s
Office. Details of this procedure can be found at [4]www.ico.org.uk.

Kind regards

Sharon
