BDS - Academic Record
Dear University of Dundee,
I will appreciate your help if you can give me some information about the process and admission in the A200 (Dentistry) Course.
1) In your previous responses to some of the question you have mentioned that the academic score is out 10. So I would like to know how you score GCSEs.
2) How are points allotted to Predicted A-levels?
3) You have also mentioned that UCAT weighs for 40% of the application, so I want to request how you the UCAT is weighed using deciles(as you have mentioned previously), i.e how points are allotted to each decile.
4) How is the SJT used?
Yours faithfully,
Zara Khan
Thank you for your email. If your message contains a request for
information the University will respond no later than 20 working days from
its receipt (or one month from receipt in the case of requests for your
own personal information).
Kind regards,

Dear Zara Khan,
Thank you for your information request which has been handled under the
Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FoI(S)A).
With regard to the selection process the University combines an Academic
Score (based on certified and predicted grades and contextual factors) and
UCAT score. These scores are weighted 60:40 Academic: UCAT for
non-graduates and 40:60 Academic: UCAT for graduates. We use the UCAT
score by categorising the applicants in deciles of UCAT performance. More
information about the UCAT can be found at [1]https://www.ucat.ac.uk/.
GCSE results and predicted grades are scored and together make up 60% of
the initial assessment stage for school leavers. UCAT accounts for the
other 40%. The personal statement is not assessed at the pre-interview
stage. Only the combined academic and UCAT scores, together with any
contextual factors, determine who gets invited to interview. At the
interview, the personal statement is used as a basis for discussion at one
or more of the stations, it is not formally assessed.
Regarding the scoring model, the maximum academic score is 10 and that
there is no minimum score as such and that we take mitigating
circumstances and contextual factors into account. We don't weigh/score
each subject - we check that applicants have completed or are completing
all the essential subjects i.e. Chemistry, Biology, Maths and English.
In response to your questions about the specifics of scoring models and
the allocation of points to UCAT deciles, I’m afraid the University is
unable to release this information to you. To place information concerning
allocation of points into the public domain is likely to prejudice
substantially the integrity of the admissions process. The University is
not prepared to release information that might create the perception of a
‘target’ or similar, leading to applicants focusing on that rather than
the totality of their application. Consequently, under section 16 of the
Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FoI(S)A) I confirm that:
a. The University holds information regarding its scoring models;
b. The University claims that this information is exempt from
disclosure;
c. The University claims the exemption in section 30(c) of FoI(S)A;
that the disclosure of this information would prejudice substantially the
effective conduct of public affairs;
d. The University claims the exemption for the reasons detailed
above.
The University is required to have regard to the public interest in the
application of this exemption. The University asserts that there is a
greater public interest in it maintaining a robust and fair admissions
process than in the disclosure of detailed information on how applications
are scored, over and above that already provided. You can find out more
regarding entry requirements here:
[2]https://www.dundee.ac.uk/undergraduate/d....
The University asserts that the release of this information would not
significantly improve the public understanding of the admissions process
given the amount of information already in the public domain -

In response to your Question 4, we do not consider SJT in our assessment
of applications at any stage.
I hope you find this information useful.
Right to review
If you are unhappy with our response to your request under FoI(S)A you may
request a review. If you wish to request a review of our response, please
email [4][email address] outlining the reason(s) for
your dissatisfaction. This must be done within 40 working days of
receiving this
email. See [5]https://www.itspublicknowledge.info/what....
Right to Appeal
If you remain dissatisfied with the way in which we handle your request
for review, you may ask the Scottish Information Commissioner to review
our decision. You must submit your request to the Commissioner within 6
months of receiving the response to review letter. The Commissioner’s
Office may be contacted by post at the following address: Kinburn Castle,
Doubledykes Road, St Andrews, KY16 9DS, by telephone on 01334 464610 and
by email at [6][email address]
Requests for a decision can also be filed online at:
[7]www.itspublicknowledge.info/Appeal. A decision by the Commissioner can
be appealed to the Court of Session on a point of law only.
Kind regards,
Obi Udeariry
