Dear Mr Fernandez

Thank you for your email in which you request information about Basketball
participation in the UK since 2010. Your email was received on 29 April
2021 and has been passed to the Information Governance Team as we are
responsible for responding to requests for information held by Sport
England.

As a public body, Sport England is subject to the terms of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004

provide you with our full response promptly and usually within twenty
working days. In some circumstances we may extend this to allow us to
consider the public interest; if this is necessary in your case I will

At this stage it is important to advise you that Sport England, just like
many other organisations and the nation generally, is dealing with the
severe impact of the coronavirus pandemic on human, physical and

of our timescales. Should this affect the delivery of a response to your
request we will advise you and request an extension.

I will be in touch again in due course and in any event not later than 28
May 2021.

In the meantime, please feel free to contact us if we can be of any
further assistance.

Kind regards

Dear Mr Fernandez

I write further to your request below for information. We have now
considered your request and I have set out our response below.

Generally speaking, the information you are seeking is either not held by
Sport England or exempt from disclosure under Section 21 of the Freedom of
information Act 2000 on the grounds that it is reasonably accessible to
you via other means. The information that we do hold is already available
on Sport England’s website and we are therefore not obliged to provide it
to you. Having said that, we have  provided the information below in order
to assist you.

Please provide information for basketball participation in the UK since
2010 - number of basketball players in the UK through the years.

Sport England measures participation in sport and physical activity. The
Active Lives survey has been used since November 2015 for this purpose.
The Active Lives Online Tool below shares the data from this survey, e.g.
see the link below for Basketball and Wheelchair basketball:

[1]https://activelives.sportengland.org/Res...

This link shows the proportion / numbers of all adults taking part at
least twice in the last 28 days (blue line), and any participation in the
last year (pink line). We have copied the image below to assist your
understanding, taken from the link above:

Please note there is overlap between the release periods (e.g. Nov 15-16
spans mid-November 15 to mid-November 16 period).

Please note that prior to November 2015, Sport England used the Active
People survey to measure participation. This is a separate survey to
Active Lives with different methodologies, and therefore the surveys are
not comparable. Active People survey data can be found here:

number of amateur/professional basketball clubs in the Country

Sport England does not hold this information. You may wish to consider
getting in touch with Basketball England to see if they can help with this
aspect of your request.

Active Places Power is our interactive mapping and reporting tool for
community sport development. Using [3]Active Places Power, a Detailed
Report of facilities was run using the following parameters to identify
indoor Sports Halls with one or more basketballs courts marked out:

Area of interest: National

Facility Type: Sports Hall, Facility Sub Type, Activity Hall, Barns, Main

Facility Operational Status: Under Construction;Operational;Temporarily
Closed;Temporarily Closed COVID

Attribute 1 of 1: Basketball courts >= 1

Accessibility Type: All

The output was downloaded and a pivot table used to create the following
summary by Region:

This shows that as of 17^th March 2021, there are 4,971 basketball courts
marked out within 4,656 sports halls, which are located at 4,492 sites.
(A site may have one or more sports halls.)

Regions Basketball courts Sports Halls
East Midlands 435 409
Eastern 523 491
London 595 565
North East 270 245
North West 697 638
South East 917 854
South West 517 490
West Midlands 532 504
Yorkshire and the Humber 485 460

Active Places does also record where Outdoor Tennis courts are overmarked
with basketball courts, but this is only a flag and so we cannot report on
how many outdoor basketball courts exist.

[4]Active Places Power is a free to use website that an enquirer can
register with to run future reports.

This completes our response to your information request.
