Dear Thomas,

Re: Information Request - Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham

Thank you for your email on 14 January in which you asked for copies of all surveys that have been carried out on the Castle and also its walls or the area immediately beside the Castle at the town of Barnard Castle. I am writing to you today as I require clarification of your request.

Barnard Castle, ringwork, shell keep castle, chapel and dovecote was scheduled in 1915, and having done an initial search of our registered files database I have seen that English Heritage hold approximately 200 files that could potentially contain information regarding surveys, and the files themselves contain papers that date from 1915 to the present day.

Please could you provide me with a date range for the information that you are most interested in. It would also be helpful to know if you are interested in receiving information about a particular type of survey, or surveys undertaken by a particular architect or organisation.

Once we receive clarification your request will be considered under either the Freedom of Information Act (2000) or the Environmental Information Regulations (2004). I am sorry that I will be unable to process your request further until I hear from you.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs. Jennifer Pearson

Dear FOI,

The date range from 1915 until the present would be suitable. I'm looking for structural surveys in particular, hope that helps you narrow your search

Yours sincerely,

Thomas

Dear Thomas,

Thank you for your Information request in which you asked for copies
of structual surveys carried out on the Castle and walls at Barnard
Castle. Your request has been processed under the Environmental
Information Regulations 2004 (EIR).

Having looked into your case I have been able to locate the following
surveys:

Barnard Castle Visual Structural Survey, 1979
Cliffs Below Barnard Castle, July 1997.
Barnard Castle Conditional Survey/ Quinquennial Report, 2000
Barnard Castle Periodic Condition Survey Report, 2009
Barnard Castle Rock Face Survey, 2014

I hope you find them of interest. Due to the size of some of the documents
I am having to send you your reply in two parts. I apologise for any
inconvenience caused. Please consider this email to be email one of two. I
would also like to take this opportunity to inform you that the report
entitled Barnard Castle Periodic Condition Survey Report, 2009 is too
large to send by email (even when pictures are compressed and the document
is zipped). If you would like me to send you a copy of this report I am
happy to do so, but I will need you to send me a postal address. I would
advise that you do not send me your postal address via the whatdotheyknow
website, as this will then put your address into the public domain. I am
happy to take your address details over the phone on the number below, or
you can email me separately on: [1][email address]

You should also be aware that some of the documents that are attached may
be subject to copyright.  Public authorities who are complying with their
statutory duty under the EIR to release information to an applicant are
not breaching the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.  Normal
copyright rules do, however, still apply and continue to protect the
rights of the copyright holder once the information is released.  You may
be in breach of copyright if you reproduce or publish any documents that
are subject to copyright without permission.

I hope that the information I have been able to provide is helpful to
you.  If however you are unhappy with this response you may request an
internal review.  Details of our review procedure are attached.

Yours sincerely
