DVLA Contact Centre, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency

Dear Mr Smith,

Thank you for your enquiry received on 25/6/2020.
Your case reference number is 02766640.

I appreciate you contacting DVLA to seek clarification on the matter.

I'm sorry but we cannot comment on your individual driving licence or what
you can drive via email. However, we are able to provide detailed
information on driving licence categories that may be found on your
licence and what these categories may allow you to drive.

Cars with and without trailers:
Category B - Motor vehicles with a Maximum Authorised Mass (MAM) not
exceeding 3500kg and designed and constructed for the carriage of no more
than eight passenger seats, with a trailer up to 750kg. (If trailer is
over 750kg, the combination MAM must not exceed 3500kg.) (minimum age
17*).
Category BE - Combinations of vehicles consisting of a vehicle in category
B and a trailer, where the combination does not come within category B,
and the MAM of the trailer does not exceed 3500kg ** (minimum age 17*).

*age 16 if you are currently getting Disability Living Allowance at the
higher rate (mobility component).
**if you have held full category BE before 19th January 2013, there is no
upper weight limit for the trailer, however, we would recommend you
contact Transport Technology and Standards
on [1][email address] to establish what weight you can safely
tow.

Please note – An exemption exists for holders of full Category B who are
aged 21 or over to ride a large Tricycle.

Category B (96) – Motor vehicles with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg, with a
trailer over 750kg, where the combination weight is between 3500kg and
4250kg (this is a EU community entitlement which was brought into force on
19th January 2013.

GB will not be conducting B(96) tests, GB drivers will need to pass a test
in category BE to gain this trailer entitlement as this category can only
be granted upon exchange of an EU/EEA member state driving licence showing
category B(96).

Category B1 (if issued before 19th January 2013)
Motor tricycles / quadricycles, three or four wheeled vehicles with an
unladen weight not exceeding 550kg (minimum age 17*).

Category B1 (after 19th January 2013)
GB no longer conducts tests in category B1. This category can only be
granted upon exchange of an EU/EEA member state driving licence showing
valid category B1 passed since 19th January 2013. This category will cover
quadricycles whose unladen mass is no more than 400 kg (550kg for vehicles
intended on carrying goods).

I hope this helps you with your enquiry.
