Autism / Asperger awareness of all Essex County Council staff & disability discrimination re Aspergers

The request was partially successful.

Dear Essex County Council,

What autism / Asperger syndrome awareness training do ALL Essex County Council staff receive?

What autism / Asperger awareness training do Essex County Council Human Resources / Personnel Department receive, (considering that there may very well be a number of employees with autism or Asperger Syndrome, diagnosed or undiagnosed)?

What autism / Asperger awareness training do ECC Occupational Health officers and other staff receive?

I am aware that somewhere in ECC currently, autism/ Aspergers is being denied as a disability - even that it is something that in the name of equality of opportunity and justice and fairness needs reasonable adjustments / understanding - very probably because of a lack of awareness training.

I thought such discrimination was against the law?

Thank you,

Yours faithfully,

[P. Smith]

Dear Ms Smith,

Thank you for your request for information, which was received by Essex
County Council on 7 December and given reference ECC-016538-11.

Please find attached information, which I believe satisfies your request:

What autism / Asperger syndrome awareness training do ALL Essex County
Council staff receive?

What autism / Asperger awareness training do Essex County Council Human
Resources / Personnel Department receive, (considering that there may very
well be a number of employees with autism or Asperger Syndrome, diagnosed
or undiagnosed)?

What autism / Asperger awareness training do ECC Occupational Health
officers and other staff receive?

I refer you to the response to FOI ECC-016099-11 provided to you on 16
December 2011 for the answer to the above questions.

I am aware that somewhere in ECC currently, autism/ Aspergers is being
denied as a disability - even that it is something that in the name of
equality of opportunity and justice and fairness needs reasonable
adjustments / understanding - very probably because of a lack of awareness
training.

I am not aware of any discrimination within ECC relating to autism or
Aspergers and, in line with the National Autism Strategy we have
implemented awareness training for social work practitioners as outlined
in FOI ECC-016099-11. We are also working with the North and South Essex
PCT’s to commission further training for the New Year.

If, after following our complaints procedure, you are still not satisfied,
you are entitled to ask the Information Commissioner to review our
decision.  You can contact him at Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow,
