Assessments - Equality Duty

B. Adams made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Work and Pensions

This request has been closed to new correspondence from the public body. Contact us if you think it ought be re-opened.

The request was successful.

Dear Department for Work and Pensions,

With regards to the original Medical Services Contract people with HIV, Down's Syndrome, Incontinence, Back Pain, Chronic Bronchitis, Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease etc. were required to travel upto 90 minutes, one way, on public transport and sit in a waiting room for an unspecified time to attend a medical examination.

1) Is this still the case or have such requirements in the “Contract” since been reviewed and/or revised e.g. in accordance with Section 149 of the Equality Act 2010 (the public sector equality duty) If so could you provide me with the details.

2) As there is a duty to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people, are such conditions along with the pain, discomfort and distress now taken into account when deciding who should attend a Medical Assessment Centre? If so who decides this for the individual claimants?

3) Could you provide me with a copy of (or link to) the DWP equality information and the equality objectives.

4) Could you provide me with an up to date list of the conditions relating to each of the following categories,

a) Unsuitable for calling to a Medical Assessment Centre.
b) Reference to Medical Advisor required for advice.
c) Tentatively invite to Medical Assessment Centre.
d) Invite to Medical Assessment Centre.

Yours faithfully,

B. Adams
