Assaults on staff and patients in in-house mental health facilities

Dear Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust,

Please could you provide me with details of the following incidents that occurred in in-patient mental health facilities managed by your trust on an annual basis, broken down by year from 2011 to 2018:

1. Total number of reported patient on staff assaults in in-patient mental health facilities managed by your Trust each year. Preferably broken down by type of assault e.g. physical/verbal etc
2. Total number of reported patient on patient assaults in in-patient mental health facilities managed by your Trust each year. Preferably broken down by type of assault e.g. physical/verbal etc
3. Number of reported arson attempts / deliberately started fires in in-patient mental health facilities managed by your Trust each year
4. Number of reported assaults that included a weapon (knife, razor blade, needle etc) in in-patient mental health facilities managed by your Trust each year
5. Total amount paid in compensation by the Trust as a result of reported assaults by patients at in-patient mental health facilities managed by your trust each year.

Details of claims where damages were paid in relation to assaults by
patients that took place on inpatient Wards/Units where damages were paid
between 2011 & 2018.

 

2011 - No damages paid

2012 - £8,837.00

2013 - £50,520.00

2014 - No damages paid

2015 - S.40(2) engaged

2016 - £20,550.00

2017 - £25,000.00

2018 to date - S.40(2) engaged

 

Please be advised, the Trust cannot confirm how much was paid in 2015 and
2018 as there was only one award in each year as a result of assault by a
patient.  The amount awarded therefore amounts to personal data, and as
such is exempt from disclosure by virtue of Section 40 – Personal Data.

 

“Section 40(2) - Personal Information” represents information that
identifies a living individual, where disclosure of the information would
breach the principles of the Data Protection Act 1998.  Personal data is
defined by Section 1 of the Data Protection Act 1998 and means data that
relates to an individual who can be identified directly or indirectly from
that data. 

 

In accordance with the S.17 of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, this
letter acts as a Refusal Notice for that information.
