Asperger's syndrome / autism support
Dear South Essex College,
Please provide copies of your policy documents / instructions / guidance / and any related information in any recorded form regarding the support of young people with Asperger's syndrome / autism in your college. E.g.: letters. emails, reports, agendas, minutes that record and reflect this policy in intention and actuality.
Please state what autism awareness training staff undertake.
Please provide figures that reflect what happens to such students - how many take up courses and how many leave, compared to other students. For the last ten years.
In what other ways do you support and monitor them?
What is your policy regarding confidentiality, and if a parent wishes to speak to you IN CONFIDENCE about their child's needs to help them continue with a course should problems arise, how is this accomplished?
Yours faithfully,
P. Smith
Hello
You have asked for copies of policy documents/instructions/guidance/and any related information in any recorded form regarding the support of young people with Asperger's Syndrome/Autism in South Essex College, asking that we make available to you letters, emails, reports, agendas and minutes reflecting this.
In addition you have asked us to provided data going back 10 years for enrolments and retention compared to the general college population, staff training records and details of how students are monitored for this period.
The college policy does not keep records for periods longer than 7 years. We estimate a keyword search will yield a minimum of 10,000 emails alone related to this enquiry. Each one would need to be read to identify relevant information. If we allow 5mins per email, this will equate to 833 hours of work.
To comply with this aspect alone of your request would exceed the appropriate cost limit.
We could however, provide you with enrolment and retention data for those declaring ASD and staff training awareness on Special Educational Needs and Disability, including ASD for the past 7 years, along with our E&D Policy, Safeguarding Policy and Learner Support Strategy.
Please advise if you would like to refine your request to what has been suggested above. Regards,
Karen Fox Additional Learning Support Manager

Further to my email below, please find attached data for those who have declared Autism spectrum, and those who have not, for the last 10 years (College only, FE and HE). However, going back that far, we cannot be certain of the accuracy of the earliest years, particularly within HE.
