Ascension Island

Edward Williams made this Freedom of Information request to Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

Automatic anti-spam measures are in place for this older request. Please let us know if a further response is expected or if you are having trouble responding.

The request was refused by Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.

Dear Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office,

BACKGROUND
https://www.ft.com/content/ff1dc189-5531...
"Priti Patel asked officials to explore the construction of an asylum processing centre on Ascension Island, a British overseas territory more than 4,000 miles from the UK in the south Atlantic, for migrants coming to Britain.
The home secretary’s officials also looked at the possibility of building an asylum centre on St Helena, part of the same island group.
But the idea of transferring asylum seekers to remote volcanic outcrops appears to have been dropped by Ms Patel. The Foreign Office was consulted on the plan and provided an assessment of the practicality of shipping asylum seekers to the remote locations."

REQUEST
Provide the assessment or similar information referred to above.

Yours faithfully,

Edward Williams

Information Rights Unit,

Dear Edward Williams

Thank you for your FOI request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

We received your request on 29th September. It has been assigned a unique
reference number (above). We aim to respond by Tuesday 27th, October.

Please note, however, that reprioritisation of resources due to the
COVID-19 crisis, and measures we are required to take to prevent the
spread of the virus, continue to have an impact on our ability to respond
to all requests within the statutory deadline.

We have significantly reduced on-site working which will mean delays to
responses which require access to paper records.

We are endeavouring to process requests as quickly as possible, and
appreciate your patience at this time.

Yours sincerely,

Dear Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office's handling of my FOI request 'Ascension Island'.

The ICO guidance says -
62. The Act does not define what might constitute a ‘reasonable’
extension of time. However, our view is that an authority
should normally take no more than an additional 20 working
days to consider the public interest, meaning that the total
time spent dealing with the request should not exceed 40
Time limits for compliance under the Freedom of Information Act (Section 10)
working days. An extension beyond this should be exceptional.
Examples of such circumstances could include extreme
pressures placed on the public authority by a major incident or
exceptional levels of complexity involving a number of external
parties. Public authorities will need to demonstrate that the
length of any time extension is justified
