Thank you for your request for information, which was received on
02/06/2020. Your request was as follows:

“Please can you provide materials under the FOI Act from "the DfE convened
internal group to begin understanding the further opportunities that
Artificial intelligence ( Al ) technology could bring in education";
including any meeting minutes with participants, correspondence via email
and their attachments / presentation materials”.

I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

The Department holds the information you have requested. However, the
Department estimates that the cost of complying with your request would
exceed the cost threshold applicable to central Government. This is £600
and represents the estimated cost of one person spending 3½ working days
locating, retrieving, and extracting the information.

Under section 12 of the Act the Department is therefore not obliged to
comply with your request and will not be processing it further.

The time it would take for all of the members of the Internal group you
refer to, to search through their inboxes for all mail relating to your
request specifically, check this information for relevance, and send this
for compiling in order to respond to the your request in full, would far
exceed this cost.

However, if you were to make a new request for a narrower category of
information or limit the scope of your request, the Department may be able
to comply with your request within the cost limit, although I cannot
guarantee that this will be the case. For example, requesting the meeting
minutes and presentation materials would not exceed the limit. It is the
‘correspondence via email’ that itself exceeds this threshold.

You requested:

"Thank you for your request for clarification. I hereby narrow my request
as suggested, to the meeting minutes and presentation materials for the
Artificial Intelligence Working Group to date, including a list of members
/ attendees, and any Terms of Reference.”

I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

A copy of the information which can be disclosed is enclosed.

The enclosed includes a small number of redactions to which we
are applying section 40(2) (personal data). Personal data is that which
relates to a living individual who can be identified from that data, or
from that data and other information, which is likely to be in, or to come
into, the possession of the requestor. Disclosure of this information
would contravene a number of the data protection principles in the General
Data Protection Regulations/Data Protection Act 2018 and would be regarded
as ‘unfair’.  By that, we mean the likely expectations of the data subject
that his or her information would not be disclosed to others and the
effect which disclosure would have on the data subject.  Section 40(2) is
an absolute exemption and is not subject to the public interest test. The
only personal data included in the enclosed information, is the name of a
civil servant if their grade is SCS or above.

The information supplied to you continues to be protected by copyright.
You are free to use it for your own purposes, including for private study
and non-commercial research, and for any other purpose authorised by an
