Thank you for your correspondence received by my office on the 3^rd
January 2016.

You have requested the following information under the terms of the
Freedom of Information Act 2000:

I am researching SMS frauds and wished to receive information about
arrests made in connection with spoofed SMS messages.

The article in question can be found over at:

request to other police forces I wanted to firstly check with yourselves
to see if this data would be obtainable.

As I am researching the number of arrests made in connection to fraudsters
using spoofed SMS messages it would be great to receive some statistics in
relation to this.

As part of a public awareness campaign it would be in the publics interest
to know these figures to form a deterrent to people attempting these kinds
of crimes. Please see the following points:

1.) How many arrests have been made (in a period you can obtain easily)
where an arrestee was prosecuted for spoofing an SMS sender ID?.

2.) Where possible to disclose, what was the kind of sentencing for such a
crime - maybe an example case?.

Your request will now be considered and you will receive a response within
the statutory timescale of defined by the Act, subject to the information
not being exempt. In some circumstances West Yorkshire Police may be
unable to achieve this deadline. If this is likely you will be informed at
the earliest opportunity. If you no longer require the information, please
inform us at your earliest convenience.
