Dear Post Office Limited,

In a publicly broadcast interview (see below weblink) the leader in the innocence campaign of Robin Garbutt stated that there had been two armed robberies at Melsonby Post Office, prior to the Garbutts taking occupation in April 2003. Robin murdered his sub-postmistress wife, Diana, on the premises in March 2010. He was convicted a year later at Teesside Crown Court.

Asked for specifics, the Garbutt campaigners have refused to provide any further details. A retired senior police officer, who was brought up in the same village, has no recollection of any such robberies. He left in 1987. Other enquiries, including searches of newspaper archives, have also drawn a blank.

Accordingly, by way of the Freedom of Information Act, please disclose the following:

In the periods (I) 1983 to 1993 (II) 1993 to 2003, the number of armed robberies recorded as taking place at Melsonby Post Office, Richmondshire, North Yorkshire.

For each of the robberies, please disclose:

(a) The value of cash and goods stolen (b) details of any injuries suffered by the occupants (c) the outcome of the subsequent police investigation as either (i) successful prosecution (ii) unsuccessful prosecution (iii) unsolved

A request in similar terms has been made to North Yorkshire Police.

Yours faithfully,

Dear Post Office Limited (POL),

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Post Office Limited's handling of my FOI request 'Armed robberies at Melsonby Post Office'.

These are the grounds of complaint:

1. As a journalist I find it incredible that POL holds no records of two armed robberies in particular that were alleged to have taken place.
(i) It is said that, in March 2009, over £11,000 was stolen from the post office safe in Melsonby, at gunpoint, and POL made restitution to the sub-postmistress of that sum two weeks later.

(ii) In March, 2010 that same sub-postmistress, Diana Garbutt, was killed during another alleged armed robbery in which over £16,000 was taken from the same safe. It is not known if POL made restitution of those funds.

2. Whilst not strictly required in a response to this request provided under the Freedom of Information Act, it would assist public understand greatly if an explanation could be given as to why no records of external crimes exist before year 2000.

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/a...

Dear Information Rights Team,

I am very grateful for the prompt and detailed response to the IRR received earlier today.

However, you do not state if restitution was made for the loss allegedly sustained in March 2009 and, if so, whether that was in full, or part.

It would be helpful to have clarification on that point at your earliest convenience.

Many thanks,

Neil Wilby
