Are the 16 Rock Characterisation Boreholes in the same area as the 16 boreholes drilled in 2004?
Dear Low Level Waste Repository Ltd,
Are the 16 Rock Characterisation Boreholes (for prospective Near Surface Disposal) in the same locations as the LLWR Offsite 16 boreholes drilled in 2004 under Application No 4/04/9008 and 9009 by British Nuclear Fuels Plc ?
If not the above locations - where are the locations of the 16 Rock Characterisation Boreholes up to 120 m for prospective Near Surface Disposal?
Yours faithfully,
Marianne Birkby

Dear Marianne Birkby,
Ref: FOI 06705
Thank you for your information request received on 15 February for
information.
I have treated your request under the Environmental Information
Regulations. I confirm that we hold the information requested and this is
provided below.
Are the 16 Rock Characterisation Boreholes (for prospective Near Surface
Disposal) in the same locations as the LLWR Offsite 16 boreholes drilled
in 2004 under Application No 4/04/9008 and 9009 by British Nuclear Fuels
Plc ?
In response to your question, I would like to clarify the purpose of the
16 boreholes you mention. They are site characterisation and monitoring
boreholes that will provide more data on the geological and
hydrogeological properties of the Quaternary sediments and Triassic
sandstone beneath the site. Groundwater monitoring installations have been
completed in each of the boreholes to provide information on groundwater
levels and quality. The information collected will be used in the
development of an updated hydrogeological model which, will ultimately
feed into the assessment models used to support the next Environmental
Safety Case due to be submitted in 2026.
They are not in the same locations referred to in your question.
If not the above locations – where are the locations of the 16 Rock
Characterisation Boreholes up to 120 m for prospective Near Surface
Disposal?
The 16 new site characterisation and monitoring boreholes are all within
the LLWR site boundary.
Again, please allow me to clarify. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority
(NDA) has asked LLWR to conduct a feasibility study to assess the capacity
of the LLWR site as part of their wider studies on near-surface disposal.
This assessment is being delivered as part of the LLWR Environmental
Safety Case (ESC) review. It includes the drilling of new characterisation
and monitoring boreholes that reach a maximum depth of 120 metres. All of
which are within the LLWR site boundary.
It is important to note that development of a near-surface disposal
facility for some ILW, whether at the LLWR site or elsewhere in England,
would require an amendment to Government policy and would be subject to
the relevant planning approvals (Town and Country Planning Act),
environmental permitting and other licensing processes – all of which
include stakeholder engagement and statutory and public consultation.
Please refer to the [1]NSD Strategic Position Paper for further details.
Please note that from 31 January, Radioactive Waste Management Limited
(RWM) and LLW Repository Limited began operating as Nuclear Waste
Services. Please send future information requests to
[2][Nuclear Waste Services Limited request email].
If you are unhappy with the way in which RWM has dealt with your request,
you have the right to require us to review our actions and decisions. If
you wish to request a review, please reply to this email or write to me at
[3][Nuclear Waste Services Limited request email] within 40 working days of receipt of
this response. You will receive a full response to your request for review
within 20 working days of its receipt.
Please remember to quote ref FOI 06705 in any correspondence about this
request.

the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
