Archaeological Data, Saughall Massie development

NJT Lauro made this Freedom of Information request to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was successful.

Dear Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service,

The new build at Saughall Massie lies close to an ancient crossing over the Arrowe Brook, potentially 5000 years old, with timbers supporting a crossing originally cut down during the late Neolitihic/Bronze Age period, supporting an Iron Age structure discovered in 2005 during the construction of the by-pass.

I assume an archaeological study was carried out before commencement of works and therefore, I would like to know:

1. What time-frame MFRS gave to archaeologists to survey the site before excavations commenced.

2. If MFRS contributed to any budget for archaeological studies.

3. Who carried out the archaeological studies.

Thank you for your assistance.

Yours faithfully,

NJT Lauro

Dear Freedom of Information Team,

Many thanks for the information supplied. Do you know if the evaluation report will be made public at some point? It would be interesting to know if anything was discovered to support late neolithic/early bronze age activity in the area.

Yours sincerely,

NJT Lauro

Dear Lauro

Please see our response from the Director for the PFI project below.

The Evaluation Report has been submitted to Merseyside Environmental Advisory Service via Wirral Borough Council as a public record of the architectural evaluation. The summary of the report notes that the investigations did not produce any archaeological findings.

Kind Regards
