Ryan Janet, London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council

Dear B Saunders

Freedom of Information Request LBBD/55196

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act,

Your request has been considered and the information is set out below.

Please can you tell me how many children are receiving any Applied

Behavioural Analysis.

Two children are being taught at home using ABA techniques.

Please can you then tell me how many of them had Applied

Behavioural Analysis as a result of tribunal and how many receive

this without a tribunal.

One child subsequently had ABA specified on the statement of SEN following
a tribunal appeal.

Please can you forward me any policy documents that are associated

with the awarding of any Applied Behavioural Analysis provision and

demonstrate how the decision is made.

The LA follows the statutory guidance with the SEN Code of Practice when
identifying teaching strategies specified in a statement of SEN. ABA
provision is not awarded to children. Hundreds of children in this local
authority are taught using structured teaching techniques, such as TEACCH
or ABA. However, all schools in Barking & Dagenham have developed
knowledge, experience and expertise in using TEACCH techniques and
strategies, highly effectively in order to help autistic children learn.
School staff focus on strategies that are proven to be effective in their
settings.

All schools will adopt particular teaching techniques that they find
effective. A few schools use ABA, another form of structured teaching.
This includes Corbets Tey School in Havering and Treetops School in
Thurrock. This local authority would place children in such maintained
special schools when suitable.

For children with statements of special educational needs, the local
authority specifies strategies in the statement as identified by those
contributing to the statutory assessment. The LA will then name the school
of parental preference within the criteria specified in statutory
guidance. If an autistic child is placed in a school using ABA techniques,
that is how they will be taught.

The same applies to other forms of structured teaching suitable for
autistic children.

Finally, please can you explain your rationale for awarding Applied

Behavioural Analysis without tribunal orders.

The previous response applies.
