Dear Mr Murray,
Your request was received on 2 April 2019 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 (‘the Act’).
You asked:
Could you please provide the:
- number of applicants (University + individual Colleges)
- number of applicants shortlisted for interview (University + individual Colleges)
- number of applicants offered a place (University + individual Colleges) of the 2018-19 cycle of
admissions to the BA in Philosophy starting in 2019-20.
The information you have requested, while held (with the exception of those shortlisted for interview), is
due for future publication in the graphs on the University’s website at
https://www.undergraduate.study.cam.ac.uk/apply/statistics in May 2019 and is therefore exempt under
section 22(1) of the Act. As this is a qualified exemption, the University has considered whether, in all
the circumstances of the case, the public interest in maintaining the exemption outweighs the public
interest in disclosing the information. The University considers that, while there is an understandable
general interest in its admissions, the extensive publication arrangements that are in place are
sufficient to meet that interest. Information about interviews is not held; all interview processes for entry
to undergraduate degree courses at the University are set and managed locally by each of the
individual Colleges, each of which is a separate legal entity and public authority under the Act.
If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your request and wish to make a
complaint or request an internal review of this decision, you should contact us quoting the reference
number above. The University would normally expect to receive your request for an internal review
within 40 working days of the date of this letter and reserves the right not to review a decision where
there has been undue delay in raising a complaint. If you are not content with the outcome of your

review, you may apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the
Information Commissioner cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the complaints
procedure provided by the University. The Information Commissioner may be contacted at: The
