Annual Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals
Dear Home Office Science Advisory Committee,
Can the Home office please give details of how the Annual Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals is put together? For example does the Home Office use expert statisticians to compile and analyse the information from the project licences they approve? How are these statistics verified as accurate and based upon actual usage?
When making comparisons with year on year tables of individual species and in the case of GM lines - how is the accuracy of the the numbers supplied checked and verified?
Yours faithfully,
sharon stratford

It has come to my notice that almost identical FOI's have been attributed To Tarnia Wilson and myself on exactly the same date ? I don't wish to cast aspersions, but is it at all possible that some confusion has taken place and that one FOI has accidently been attributed to both of us ?
Thank you for you help, really appreciate the work that you do, it's invaluable
Yours sincerely,
sharon stratford
Dear Sharon,
I can confirm that both FOI responses are correct. The original request questions are included in the response, and in both instances the information you have requested can be found in the User Guide for the statistics.

To be specific, section 2.2 discusses the data source and section 3.2 details the quality assurance processes the data is subject to - including that records are subject to audit by the Animals in Science Regulation Unit (ASRU). 3.2 also clarifies that the statistics are compiled by statisticians within the Home Office. More information on ASRU's work administering and enforcing The Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 can be found at the link below.
