am entitled under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I request to know the
information for the year 2022 & 2023 (01/01/2022 to 31/12/2022 and 01/01/2023 - 31/12/2023).

1. Did your university conduct experiments on animals in the year 2022 & 2023?
2. How many animals were used in experiments(species & number of each)?
3. How many animals were bred on the premises (species & number of each)?
4. What was the nature and outcome of these experiments?
5. What are the Home Office licence classifications for these experiments in
terms of pain, lasting harm, etc. if classified (species & number of each)?
6. Were the animals used for medical or non-medical research?
7. Which departments of your university were or are engaged in such research?
8. How many animals were killed without being used for experiments (species &
a number of each)?
9. How many animals were rehomed (species & number of each)?
10. Of those that were not re-homed, why not?
11. Does the university receive an income for performing animal research?
12. Does the university incur any costs by performing animal research?
13. Were there more non-animal research methods used than animal methods?
14. Which non-animal research methods are available at the university?

Yes.

2022 - 711 mice.
2023 - 2 rats, 724 mice.
3. How many animals were bred on the premises (species & number of each)?
All were bred on site.
4. What was the nature and outcome of these experiments?
Mice: basic research – multisystemic, basic research - musculoskeletal
system, translational and applied research – human neuromuscular
disorders.
Rats: basic research - nervous system.
5. What are the Home Office licence classifications for these experiments
in terms of pain, lasting harm, etc. if classified (species & number of
each)?
2022 - Mice: 301 Sub-Threshold; 185 Mild; 225 Moderate. 
2023 - Rats: 2 Mild. Mice: Sub-Threshold 487; Mild 162; Moderate 75.
6. Were the animals used for medical or non-medical research?
Medical research.
7. Which departments of your university were or are engaged in such
research?
Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of Natural Sciences.
8. How many animals were killed without being used for experiments
(species & a number of each)?
2022 - mice 127.
2023 - mice 182.
9. How many animals were rehomed (species & number of each)?
None (0).
10. Of those that were not re-homed, why not?
Not suitable rehoming candidates.
11. Does the university receive an income for performing animal research?
Yes (research income).
12. Does the university incur any costs by performing animal research?
Yes.
13. Were there more non-animal research methods used than animal methods?
Yes.
14. Which non-animal research methods are available at the university?
Use of in silico modelling is routine in several areas, numerous in vitro
methods involving immortalised cell lines, including cell culture work and
tissue modelling are also employed across the University, as well as many
other research methodologies that do not involve the use of animals.
