Dear Freedom Of Information,

Thank you Janette.

You asked me to clarify my question "What is the ratio of using animal models and using non-animal models in experiments/research?"

Of all the tests/research performed at De Montfort University how many use animals models and how many non-animal models. Eg 70% animal 30% non-animal.

Yours sincerely,
Wendy Park

Dear Wendy

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000 - INFORMATION REQUEST

Your request for information has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act and our response is as follows:

Did your university conduct experiments on animals in the year 2021? Yes

If yes to the above question, how many animals were held on the premises for research purposes. 23

What species of animal were used and how many of each? 3 x C57 mice and 20 x CD1 rats

How many animals, held on the premises, were killed without being used for experiments? Please list numbers and species.
Zero

How many animals rehomed? Please list numbers and species.
Zero

Are animals bred on site? If yes, please list numbers and species.
No breeding on site.

Does the university receive an income for performing animal research?
Yes, not specifically for undertaking animal research, but as part of wider research grants which may require a very small number of researchers to use animal tissue.

Does the university incur any costs by performing animal research? Yes

What is the ratio of using animal models and using non-animal models in experiments/research?
The faculty have been unable to provide an exact ratio but think that it is likely to be >99% non-animal to <1% animal experiments. This is based on the recent REF submissions where there were 136 submissions from the Health and Life Sciences Faculty, only 1 of which involved animal experiments.
