Anaesthesia Associate Supervision
Dear Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,
May I ask, since the publication of the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ scope of practice for anaesthesia associates in April 2016:
A) How many patients have been anaesthetised by an anaesthesia associate where the supervising consultant anaesthetist was simultaneously responsible for either solo anaesthetic cover of another patient, or was responsible for more than two anaesthetised patients?
B) How many hand surgery patients have had anaesthesia provided by an anaesthesia associate without a supervising consultant anaesthetist present in the same theatre suite?
C) How many patients have been anaesthetised by trainee anaesthesia associates without direct 1:1 consultant anaesthetist supervision?
D) How many patients have been anaesthetised by anaesthesia associates supervised by - or supervision delegated to - a trainee (not yet consultant) anaesthetist?
Yours faithfully,
C Owens

Dear Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust,
Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of Information reviews.
I am writing to request an internal review of Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's handling of my FOI request 'Anaesthesia Associate Supervision'.
My FOI request was received by you on 13th October 2023 with an expectation that I would receive a response within 20 working days, that is by 10th November 2023. On the 10th November 2023 I received an apology that the request was taking longer as information was still awaited from the relevant departments.
It has now been a further 20 working days and I have received neither the information I requested nor any further response to my FOI request.
A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is available on the Internet at this address: https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/a...
Yours faithfully,
C Owens
