Henderson, Andrew,

Dear Mr Bell

LFS/AH/RSN22459

Further to your recent request I have had the opportunity to discuss your enquiry with colleagues in our Finance department.

By way of background, the Queensway Tunnel was opened in 1934 and the Kingsway Tunnel was opened in 1971. Your request would therefore cover 87 years of operation of the Queensway and 50 years of the Kingsway. There is no requirement for us to retain records of this type indefinitely, and we therefore do not hold the entirety of the information you have requested.

From conducting searches we can confirm that we do hold the requested information dating back to the 2003/04 financial year, although this is a combined total from both tunnels. Before formally responding we wanted to check with you first that you would be interested in receiving this limited amount of information rather than the original scope of your request?

Kind regards,

Andy

Dear Henderson, Andrew,

Many thanks for your response.

I would like that information thank you.

I wonder in addition if you may be able to satisfy my query by another way. I am specifically trying to find out if the total revenue recieved by both tunnels since opening has exceeded the cost of the total build cost for said tunnels originally? (If you cannot answer that- please just provide the information you have said you can).

Yours sincerely,

Daniel Bell

In terms of the construction costs of the tunnels, we no longer hold exact
figures for the initial build and both tunnels have required considerable
maintenance and renovations over their lifetimes. It has been reported
that the original cost of the Queensway Tunnel in 1934 was £8m and the
cost of the Kingsway Tunnel in 1971 was £21.5m (excluding land).

We do hold the current value of both tunnels as assets should you wish to
receive this.

I trust that this information is of interest to you.
