e.Please also confirm the concentrations of each pesticide used at
application.

Concentrations applied as per the product safety sheet as detailed in
answer 1a.

2. What strategies does the council have in place to reduce the use of
these pesticides? Please provide detail on these efforts including dates
and costings where possible.

The Council is creating a Horticultural Framework which will include a
request for contractors to reduce the amount of glyphosate within their
sprays and to provide alternative non-glyphosate based chemicals to treat
weeds. Contractors will be encouraged to use technologically smart
machines to identify and spray areas with weeds only, thereby reducing
level of glyphosate used. The Service uses directional nozzles to control
spray direction and to limit droplet spread. The Council intends to pilot
and test a number of different techniques and products to determine an
equitable level of control of weeds in 2021.

3. How much has the council spent on purchasing and spraying amenity
pesticides over the past 5 years? Please include staff costs of people
employed to undertake this (either contractors or council staff), personal
protective equipment, safety training, spray equipment, hazard signs, etc.

Cost of contractors for Road verge spraying (twice a year) and control of
invasive non-native species - £111,394 since 2017 (2016/2017 data not
available). Please note that for other activities such as preparation of
herbaceous borders, or wildflower creation, a total cost is provided for
planting, herbicide treatment and traffic management as a whole and
therefore an exact figure cannot be calculated. Breakdown per year for
contractors where the activity is solely for spraying is as follows:

2020/2021 - £17,500
2019/2020 - £34,975
2018/2019 - £31,511
2017/2018 - £27,408
2016/2017 - Data not available

Please see below breakdown of in-house costs for equipment. As the service
is integrated between open space maintenance, cemeteries and street
cleaning we are unable to provide a cost specifically in relation to
manpower, PPE, signage etc.

2020/2021 (part) - £1363.46
2019/2020 - £3003.75
2018/2019 - £751.60
2017/2018 - £2266.08
2016/2017 - Data not available for full year (in-house spend recorded of
£107.80)

Cost for purchase of herbicide;

20/21 - £2683 (part year)
19/20 - £24640
18/19 - £17,232
17/18 - £28,364
16/17 - £2279 (part year, full year data not available)
