Dear Glasgow Caledonian University,

I am writing to request information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. I am requesting an academic history of 1999 alumnus Hassan Feridon, including full dates for when he applied for M.Phil. and Ph.D. at GCU (or the relevant institution before GCU was formed), full dates for when he enrolled for each, what M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs he enrolled for, whether they were taught or research programs, whether they were full-time or part-time study programs, whether there were studentships, scholarships or grants, years of study for M.Phil and Ph.D. specifying any possible leaves or suspensions of registration, annual tuition fees, full dates of graduation, final grade/award (e.g. GPA, %, classification), who supervised and advised his M.Phil. and Ph.D. theses and full dates of submission and oral examination, who was on the board of examiners for each thesis, whether they were internal or external, and whether there were independent researchers present to chair the examination and if so who they were. Also, please clarify whether and when Hassan Feridon resided in a dormitory during the course of his studies and if so a list of his roommates. Finally, please provide me with a list of lecturers and professors by year and subject who he attended their lectures while studying for M.Phil. and Ph.D.

I refer to your request dated 14 September 2018 for an internal review of
the University’s response to your request under the Freedom of Information
(Scotland) Act 2002 dated 15 August 2018. You have sought a review on the
basis that you did not receive a response to your request within 20
working days. Your request for a review is upheld on this basis and the
University apologises for the delay in providing you a response to this
request. Please find below the University’s response to your specific
questions.

 

1.       full dates for when he applied for M.Phil. and Ph.D. at GCU (or
the relevant institution before GCU was formed),

 

The University no longer holds this level of detail as this information
has been disposed of in line with the University Records Retention
Schedule. See Note 1 .

 

2.       full dates for when he enrolled for each,

 

This student was enrolled for an MPhil from 1992/93 to 1995/96 and PhD
from 1996/97 to 1998/99.

 

3.       what M.Phil. and Ph.D. programs he enrolled for,

 

The University does not name its research programmes.  The titles of his
theses are:  The Islamic Legislative Power with Reference to the Iranian
Experience (MPhil); The Flexibility of Shariah (Islamic Law) with
Reference to the Iranian Experience (PhD)

 

4.       whether they were taught or research programs,

 

Research programmes.

 

5.       whether they were full-time or part-time study programs,

 

Fulltime.

 

6.       whether there were studentships, scholarships or grants,

 

This student received a scholarship for his PhD. We do not hold this
information for his MPhil. See Note 1.

 

7.       years of study for M.Phil and Ph.D. specifying any possible
leaves or suspensions of registration, annual tuition fees,

 

The University does not hold records of any periods of leave or
suspensions or the annual tuition fee. See Note 1.

 

8.       full dates of graduation,

 

This student did not attend the graduation and award ceremony for his
MPhil award on 6 July 1996 but graduated in absentia. He did attend the
graduation and award ceremony in Glasgow on 13 November 1999 for his PhD
award.

 

9.       final grade/award (e.g. GPA, %, classification), 

 

There is no final grade for research degrees. The classification is either
award or no award.  He was awarded MPhil and PhD respectively for his two
theses.

 

10.   who supervised and advised his M.Phil. and Ph.D. theses  

 

MPhil Professor Sayed Hassan Amin then Dr Mahdi Zahraa, PhD thesis Dr
Mahdi Zahraa (Director of Studies).

 

11.   full dates of submission and oral examination,

 

The University does not hold information on the date of submission of the
PhD or MPhil or the date of oral examination of the MPhil: See Note 1. The
date of oral examination for this PhD was 16 April 1999.

 

12.   who was on the board of examiners for each thesis,

 

The University no longer holds this level of detail for the MPhil See note
1 The University holds this information for the PhD exam but this is
personal information relating to identifiable individuals. To provide you
with this information would put the University in breach of the data
protection principles in Article 5(1) of the GDPR. Hence the University is
relying on Section 38(1)(b) of the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act
2002 to withhold this information.

 

13.   whether they were internal or external,

 

All research degree exams have both internal and external exams.

 

14.   whether there were independent researchers present to chair the
examination and if so who they were.

 

Chair for PhD:  Senior Member of Department of Law and Public
Administration   We no longer hold the information for MPhil. See Note 1.

 

15.   whether and when Hassan Feridon resided in a dormitory during the
course of his studies and if so a list of his roommates.

 

The University does not hold this information.  See Note 1. 

 

16.   please provide me with a list of lecturers and professors by year
and subject who he attended their lectures while studying for M.Phil. and
Ph.D.

 

As was the norm for UK research students, there was no requirement to
attend lectures as part of their studies. This student may have chosen to
attend lectures however the University does not hold this information: See
Note 1.

 

Note 1:  Where the University does not hold the information, the
University is relying on an exemption in the Freedom of Information
(Scotland) Act 2002 Section 17 (1) (b) Information not held
