Alternative Provision - registered, unregistered and private providers

The request was partially successful.

Dear Department for Education,

I would like to a complete list of all Alternative provision providers, whether PRUs, free schools, and private providers of AP for learners excluded or at risk of exclusion from mainstream education, from all Local authorities in the UK. This information should have been found through the alternative provision census each year, ideally I would like the most up to date information, though as I fully understand that may not be possible information from 2016 would also be useful. I wish to recieve a list of providers and the subjects specific course they offer eg Level 1 maths, gcse maths etc. All of this information is collected in the alternative provision census.

Yours faithfully,

rachel thompson

Dear Rachel Thompson

Thank you for your request for information, which was received on 29
October 2017. You requested the following:

excluded or at risk of exclusion from mainstream education, from all Local
authorities in the UK. This information should have been found through the

I have dealt with your request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I have interpreted your request for a list of alternative provision (AP)
providers to be providers of alternative provision settings where
education is provided exclusively to children who would not otherwise
receive a suitable education, by reason of illness, exclusion or for any
other reason.  I have also interpreted your request for a list of
alternative providers and the specific subjects they offer to the pupils
in these setting.

Alternative provision can be delivered in a number of settings. This
includes state place funded alternative provision schools (pupil referral
units (PRUs), alternative provision academies and alternative provision
free schools). It can also be provided in other settings, including
independent schools^1, providers from the voluntary sector, further
education colleges and other post-16 settings with a pre-16 offer.

In addition, there are a number of private providers of alternative
provision, which either deliver part-time education to children or full
time education to a very small number of children.  Part time settings and
full time settings which do not meet the definition of an independent
school do not have to be registered with the Department, and as such
details of these providers are not held by the Department.

Under section 21 of the Act, the Department is not required to provide
information in response to a request if it is already reasonably
accessible to you.   Some of the information you have requested is
publicly available and can be found on the Department’s website [1]Get
information about schools.  This includes records on all state place
funded alternative provision and local authorities in England.

The information supplied to you continues to be protected by copyright.
You are free to use it for your own purposes, including for private study
and non-commercial research, and for any other purpose authorised by an
exception in current copyright law. Documents (except photographs) can be

The school census and the alternative provision census which you refer to
collect broad data on AP. The school census captures information about
placements in state-place funded alternative provision settings, including
pupil referral units, alternative provision academies and alternative
provision free schools.  The alternative provision census collects
information from local authorities for pupils who attend institutions
which are not state place funded, for whom the local authority is paying
full/part time tuition; such as, independent schools and voluntary/private
organisations.

The alternative provision census data provides the number of learners and
their characteristics.  It does not collect information on the specific
subjects or courses provided by individual providers.  Some providers
voluntarily choose to publish this information on their website which you
may find useful. From January 2018, the census will also collection
additional data on the reason pupils are in these placements, the settings
and attendance pattern of the placements.
