Dear NHS North West London Integrated Care Board,

Please can you explain the process of allocating NHS funds for NHS patients sent to Private Hospitals and Clinics for treatment, especially in terms of your ICB budget. I would be grateful if you can also tell me who is responsible (roles) for setting and managing these budgets within your ICB.

Yours faithfully,

Ron Sheldrick

Dear Ron Sheldrick,

Thank you for your information request sent to NHS North West London
Integrated Care Board asking for information about allocations of funds to
private hospitals.

The NW London ICB does not have a process for allocating NHS funds to
private hospitals or clinics; the independent sector is usually contracted
on a cost per case basis driven by patient choice where applicable. The
ICB will contract with private providers but this is led through budgets
for a specific area/ defined by service and will follow procurement
processes (where both NHS, private & independent, and third sector
organisations will be able to tender). The ICB publishes a list of its
contract awards on its website. Budgets are set based on historic demand,
national policy, population changes, and local commissioning decisions and
not because a provider is an NHS organisation or not.

Decisions on budget are agreed through the Governing Body and details of
that is available on the ICB’s website ([1]www.nwlondonicb.nhs.uk).
