Air quality monitoring and mitigation
Dear Hambleton District Council,
Please can you tell me:
- what air quality monitoring you have done on and surrounding industrial estates in your area within the past five years.
- how the results compared with national and European targets for permissible levels of pollutants
- what assessments as to the impact upon residents' health and quality of life the council has undertaken following these measurements
- what mitigation measures the council has undertaken to improve air quality on and surrounding industrial estates
- and what measurable effect these mitigation methods have had on air quality.
Thank you
Yours faithfully,
Louise Cole

Dear Ms Cole,
Thank you for your email requesting information on air quality monitoring
and mitigation.
What air quality monitoring you have done on and surrounding industrial
estates in your area within the past five years?
The council has monitored two locations next to the Leeming Bar Industrial
Estate, Leeming Bar, North Yorkshire since July 2009. The monitoring uses
‘diffusion tubes’ to monitor nitrogen dioxide concentrations.
How the results compared with national and European targets for
permissible levels of pollutants
The results are shown in the table below and are below the UK and EU air
quality objective for nitrogen dioxide annual average.

What assessments as to the impact upon residents' health and quality of
life the council has undertaken following these measurements
Because the results are below the air quality objective no further
assessment has been carried out.
What mitigation measures the council has undertaken to improve air quality
on and surrounding industrial estates
Because the results are below the air quality objective no mitigation has
been required.
What measurable effect these mitigation methods have had on air quality
No mitigation measures have been required as the results are below the air
quality objective.
Yours sincerely,
John Warren
