Agency Nurses in the NHS
Dear Nursing and Midwifery Council,
Please could you tell me how many nurses there are registered with the NMC
Also do you have statistics on the employee status of these nurses? How many are employed by the NHS directly and how many are agency?
Yours faithfully,
Emma

Dear Emma,
Freedom of Information Request
Thank you for your request for information from the Nursing and Midwifery
Council (NMC). Your request was received on 03/04/2017 and dealt with
under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOI Act).
You have asked for the following information:
“Please could you tell me how many nurses there are registered with the
NMC
Also do you have statistics on the employee status of these nurses? How
many are employed by the NHS directly and how many are agency?”
Response

Regarding the second part of your request, unfortunately the NMC cannot
provide you with these stats as we do not track employer information.
This information will likely be available in the future. With the
introduction of Revalidation, the information reported on by the NMC may
eventually expand to include employer information. However it will take a
few years to accumulate this data before it can be considered accurate as
not all registrants will have had to revalidate yet.
End of Response.
If you are dissatisfied with the response you have received, you have the
right, under Section 50 of the FOI Act to appeal against this decision via
the NMC Freedom of Information complaints procedure (below).
Thank you,
Yours sincerely
