West Sussex County Council

Dear Ms. Moore,

I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request of 24 June
2010.

Please note that West Sussex County Council does not use or recognise the
term "forced adoption" and we find it unhelpfully perjorative. The
children in question are children placed with adoptive parents under the
provisions of a placement order and legally adopted by a court making an
adoption order according to due process.

Please see below for the figures you requested:

+------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| Reporting Year | Number of children adopted after consent dispensed |
| (Apr - Mar) | with by court |
|----------------+-------------------------------------------------------|
| 2006/07 | 24 |
|----------------+-------------------------------------------------------|
| 2007/08 | 26 |
|----------------+-------------------------------------------------------|
| 2008/09 | 28 |
|----------------+-------------------------------------------------------|
| 2009/10 | 18 |
+------------------------------------------------------------------------+

Yours sincerely,

Some interesting numbers. However, I would like to point out that the term "Forced adoption" is correctly applied when the birth parents' express voluntary written consent has either not been sought, or has been dispensed with under the Children And Adoption Act 2002, or written consent has been obtained under duress.
