ACCESS I., Durham University

Dear William Banner

Colleagues have asked me to get in touch with you to request clarification
in relation to your request below.

We would not respond to your questions relating to 2019/20 admissions as
the cycle is still ongoing.  If you would like to request this data you
would need to re-submit your request after 20th October for this
information.

Further information is available from the FAQ specifically about Economics
applications
[1]https://studyatdurham.microsoftcrmportal...
. As mentioned in this FAQ, the number of places available this year has
decreased, so the success rate and qualifications for applicants last year
will not give a good indication of circumstances this year.

With the above in mind we would be grateful if you could confirm if you
would like us to go ahead with your request for the 2018/19 information
that you requested.

Your request will be placed on hold until we receive the requested
clarification from you.  If however we do not receive clarification within
30 days of this email we will consider the request closed.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Dear ACCESS I.,

Thank you very much for telling me when I can ask for the 2019/20 data. I understand that the data will be very different for 2018/19 but I would greatly appreciate it if you could still provide the 2018/19 data.

Thank you again,

Yours sincerely,

William Banner

ACCESS I., Durham University

Dear William Banner

Further to our acknowledgement of your request for information, I am
writing to let you know that unfortunately there will be a delay in our
full response to you.

The University, like other organisations, is facing unprecedented
challenges during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Some resources have
been diverted away from usual compliance and information rights work and
despite best efforts it is not possible to access some University
information whilst staff work remotely.

We will aim to fully respond as soon as we are able to do so and in the
meantime we will aim to update you weekly, subject to demand on the
service.

Yours sincerely

ACCESS I., Durham University

Dear William Banner

Thank you for your request for information from Durham University.
Colleagues have provided the information below/attached in response to
your questions.

Please may I request the following information for the entry years 2019
and 2020 (i.e. 2018/19 and 2019/20 admissions cycles) for the L100
Economics course at the Durham University:

The University confirms that it holds the information for 2019/20 that
you have requested.  However, the University declines your request for
release  under section 43(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000
(FOIA).  Section 43(2) of the FOIA exempts information from release where
its disclosure under the Act would, or would be likely to, prejudice the
commercial interests of any person.  As section 43(2) is a qualified
exemption, the University has conducted a public interest test and has
concluded that release of this data would prejudice the University’s
commercial interests.

The University recognises that there can be a public interest in
understanding student enrolment patterns and trends.  However, as the
admissions cycle is still active, release of the requested information
could significantly weaken our current position by allowing competitors to
have a better understanding of our market share strategies and adapt their
own plans accordingly.  Consequently, the University’s position in this
specialist market would be undermined as competitors would be able to
tailor their own admission’s strategies to match or exceed our own
targets.

You could resubmit your request once the cycle has closed.  If you are
only interested in Postgraduate Taught courses this would be at the end of
October 2020.

We will answer the remainder of your questions relating to 2018/19 only.

We strictly adhere to the UCAS deadline for fair and equal consideration
of 15th January. Therefore we only make a small percentage of decisions
before this date, so that we know exactly what our pool of applications
looks like. This allows us to make the most informed decisions. We receive
tens of thousands of UG applications, which is why it takes until the UCAS
deadline of 31st March to send them all out.

If you are dissatisfied with the University’s response to your freedom of
information request, you can ask us to internally review our handling of
your request, including the application of any exemptions applied.  To do
this, please email [15][Durham University request email] or write to:
