Yours faithfully,

Dear Ernest,
I refer to your recent request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000
regarding admission statistics for A100 Medicine.
We do not hold much of the information that you request. In accordance
with our Data Protection policy, the College only holds information on
candidates whose applications were ultimately successful: information
relating to unsuccessful applicants is destroyed one year after
applications are made. This applies to all of the admissions cycles that
you are enquiring about: admission in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
In addition, some of the information that you request is exempt under
section 40(2) of the Act (Data Protection) as it is the personal data of
the individuals concerned. We could give aggregated or disassociated
information in response to some of the parts of your request.
In summary, what we hold and could disclose is as follows, in italics:
1. The predicted and achieved Advanced Level or International
Baccalaureate grades/points, with their corresponding subjects, for each
individual given an interview invitation for the A100 Medicine course
during the previous 3 admissions cycles;
We only have data for admitted candidates. We could give aggregated data
for A levels, giving the numbers of each grade (predicted and achieved for
popular subjects: for subjects offered by fewer than five candidates,
these would be amalgamated under “other subjects”).Those taking the IB
were so few that we cannot give any information as it is exempt under
section 40(2) of the Act.
2. The final offer status (Offer, No Offer) for each application
receiving an interview;
We only have data for admitted candidates.
3. The residency status (i.e. Home/EU or Overseas) of the
individuals referred to in Question 1;
We only have data for admitted candidates. We could provide the total
numbers for each residency status.
4. The school of origin of the individuals referred to in Question
1;
We only have data for admitted candidates. We cannot give this information
as it is exempt under section 40(2) of the Act.
5. The BMAT score for each individual referred to in Question 1;
We only have data for admitted candidates. We can list the scores,
independently of any other data.
6. The interview scores as well as any documented comments from said
interviews for each individual referred to in Question 1;
We only have data for admitted candidates. We can list the scores,
independently of any other data. We cannot give any comments as they are
exempt under section 40(2) of the Act.
I request that, if at all possible (and not detrimental to the sucess of
this request), the information listed be supplied in a spreadsheet.
We are unable to give information in a form that would link the answers to
each of your questions, as this might lead to the identification of the
personal data of an individual candidate.
In accordance with section 16 of the Act we are writing to ask if, given
the above, you would like to receive the limited information that we do
have and are able to disclose, or whether you would like to refine your
request.
In considering this, you may also find the following useful. The
University and College aim to provide clear information on the chances of
getting a place at Cambridge, while at the same time maintaining the
confidentiality of the academic and personal information of individual
applicants. A range of information is provided in the form of published
annual statistics of applications, offers and acceptances:
(1) for each course and/or College for the last five years, through an
interactive graph generator;
(2) by gender, age, geographical region, ethnicity, disability and UCAS
tariffs, through a published report; and
(3) by UCAS Apply Centre, through a published report.

I hope you find this information helpful. The College’s complaints
procedure provides for an internal review of the decisions regarding this
response if you are dissatisfied with it. You should let me know if you
wish to use it, letting me know your reasons for dissatisfaction and any
other matters to which the College should have regard. The review will be
conducted by another officer of the College, who will notify you of its
outcome.
You have a right to apply to the Information Commissioner for a decision
whether, in any specified respect, your request to the College for
information has been dealt with in accordance with the requirements of the
Freedom of Information Act. Details may be found on the Information
Commissioner’s website at [4]www.ico.gov.uk.
