SAM made this Freedom of Information request to University of Birmingham

This request has been closed to new correspondence. Contact us if you think it should be reopened.

The request was partially successful.

Dear University of Birmingham,

Under the Freedom of Information Act, please could you provide me
with the following information:

The total number of applications received by the university for
consideration for the Post Graduate or higher level courses from
the Indian Sub-Continent for the following academic year 2012,
2011, 2010 & 2009 and the number of applicants who actually
enrolled.

I anticipate that the best way to provide this information is to
have a spreadsheet divided up into the individual years, and each
year in turn being divided up unto the individual courses (which
must have their course code next to them).

I look forward to hearing from you within the 20 day deadline.

Yours faithfully,

SAM

FOI, University of Birmingham

Dear Sam

Section 8(1) of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) sets out the criteria for making a valid request. Section 8(1)(b) states that that a request must include the name of the applicant and an address for correspondence.

The Information Commissioner has issued guidance on what information would constitute a valid name. This guidance states that title and/or first name and surname satisfies this requirement.

Example: Mr Arthur Thomas Roberts could satisfy section 8(1)(b) of the FOIA by stating his name in a request for information as "Arthur Roberts", "A. T. Roberts", or "Mr Roberts", but not by stating his name as "Arthur" or "A.T.R."

The University of Birmingham confirms that it is applying this guidance and therefore cannot progress your request until you have provided a valid name.

Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.

Regards

Freedom of Information Team
