Dear Kumar
I am writing in response to your Freedom of Information request dated
11^th August 2017in which you requested information regarding Admissions
Policy for UG Dental Surgery Course
For ease of reference, I have reproduced your questions below and set out
our corresponding responses:
1. The admission policy including the scoring and ranking procedure to
shortlist International (non-EU) applicants for interviews.
The UCAS submissions of the applicants is scored. This includes GCSE (or
equivalents offered), A levels (or equivalents offered), UKCAT and SJT
score along with evaluations of the personal and supporting statements and
work experiences. From the resultant scoring, interviews are conducted and
offers made. Only the 7 best GCSEs and 3 best A levels (or equivalents)
are scored. All essential requirements, as detailed in our admissions
documentation, must be met.
2. How is the UKCAT score used to rank applicants?
The UKCAT score is used to help provide an overall score from an
application. It scores about one quarter of the overall possible score.
3. What is the weighting used for UKCAT score and predicted A-level grades
in the ranking?
No weighting is used. Each component scores about one quarter of the total
score possible. Predicted grades are scored as if they were achieved
grades
4. Is there a cut-off score for UKCAT? If so, what is the range of the
cut-off score?
No
5. Are International (non-EU) applicants ranked against other
International applicants, or are they ranked against all applicants both
Home/EU and International?
International are ONLY ranked against international applications.
6. How is the personal statement used in the selection process? Is there a
score for personal statement?
The personal statement is used to provide evidence of a desire to study
dentistry along with proof or work experience, lifestyle and general
indications for a career in dentistry.
7. Please provide a spreadsheet of all applicants, Home/EU and
International (non-EU), who were offered a place, including UKCAT score,
and interview scores (if applicable).
Please see attached spreadsheet. Please note that the scores reflect the
different processes utilised to recruit Home and Overseas students.

Dear InfoRequest,
Thank you for your reply.
I would like to seek clarification below:
1) You mention UCAS submissions are scored and this includes GCSE, A levels, UKCAT and SJT scores.
What if the International (non-EU) candidate, who is taking A levels, do not have GCSE or equivalent qualification. How would Cardiff manage the evaluation of this candidate? Would he be disadvantaged because of this?
2) You mention that each component of the UKCAT score and A level grades contribute about one quarter of the total possible score. What are the other components that contribute to the total score and indicate the percentage contribution for each of these components.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Kumar Cherian
Dear Kumar
Please see below for our responses:
1. You mention UCAS submissions are scored and this includes GCSE, A
levels, UKCAT and SJT scores. What if the International (non-EU)
candidate, who is taking A levels, do not have GCSE or equivalent
qualification. How would Cardiff manage the evaluation of this candidate?
Would he be disadvantaged because of this?
No there would be an individual evaluation of such a candidate and the A
level scores without GCSEs equated so that this person receives the same
score evaluation as a candidate with GCSEs. As with all non-standard
applications, any who apply with unusual backgrounds are dealt with
individually in attempt to ensure the application receives as much and as
fair attention and is not significantly disadvantaged.
2. You mention that each component of the UKCAT score and A level grades
contribute about one quarter of the total possible score. What are the
other components that contribute to the total score and indicate the
percentage contribution for each of these components?
The 4 components that are used to give the overall score are the GSCE
score, the A level score, the UKCAT score and the SJT score. The
percentage contributions used for international students (at present) are
GCSEs 24% A levels 26%, UKCAT score 28%, SJT 22%
